"Anne of Green Gables" has everything: love, death, friendship, accidental intoxication, puffed sleeves, small- town mischief and oodles of heart- warming exchanges. The enduring story by Canadi- an author Lucy Maud Montgom- ery remains one of the best-loved exports of the True North Strong and Free. The novel and its se- quels have been adapted many times for the screen and stage, and evidently there's no such thing as too much Anne. PBS nabbed the U.S. rights for "Anne of Green Gables," a recent Cana- dian TV movie, and it airs Thurs- day, Nov. 24. It has to be said that anyone at- tempting a "Green Gables" re- make has some big shoes to fill. For many, Megan Follows ("Reign") is the definitive Anne, having played the fanciful orphan to perfection in the 1985 miniseries that scored the actress a Gemini Award (the Cana- dian equivalent of the Emmys), and nothing can top that produc- tion. A great many adaptations have come before and after that one, however, and it seems there's a lot of Anne going around right now. CBC and Netflix will present their own offering sometime in the new year — an eight-episode minise- ries adapted by Moira Walley- Beckett of "Breaking Bad." Clearly, there's no such thing as too much Anne. The story is of a little orphan girl from Nova Scotia, who is mistak- enly adopted by an aging brother and sister who had requested a boy to help run their farm in rural Prince Edward Island. The austere Marilla Cuthbert wants to return the highly imaginative chatterbox to the orphanage, but after a few days, decides to let her stay, in part thanks to the persuasion of her shy and kindhearted brother, Matthew. The book follows Anne as she grows and makes a home in the small town of Avonlea: making friends, vexing (but eventually win- ning over) polar-opposite Marilla, and getting in and out of a multi- tude of scrapes. Appropriately, the TV movie airing on PBS features a mostly Canadian cast, including Ella Bal- lentine ("The Captive," 2014) as Anne Shirley, Sara Botsford ("Ride") as Marilla, and Emmy winner Martin Sheen ("The West Wing") as Matthew.
