Sunday afternoon
"Succession," a new family dra-
ma starring Brian Cox ("Brave-
heart," 1995) and Kieran Culkin
("Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,"
2010), is moving into the pilot
phase with enough big names at-
tached to it that it could soon join
the ranks of the aforementioned
television staples.
"Succession" has a premise
that's ripped from modern-day
tabloid headlines. The show tells
the story of the Roys, a powerful
American family with global me-
dia interests. Behind the scenes,
though, the family is dysfunction-
al, with its own internal power
struggles and loyalties always
lurking just below the surface.
Cox leads the pilot's cast as pa-
triarch Logan Roy. Powerful and
authoritative, he heads the family's
international media conglomerate.
Culkin plays his son, Roman. The
polar opposite of his father, Roman
is fun-loving and speaks his mind.
Also on board for the pilot are
Sarah Snook ("Steve Jobs," 2015),
Jeremy Strong ("Zero Dark Thirty,"
2012), Nicholas Braun ("The Perks
of Being a Wallflower," 2012) and
Matthew Macfadyen ("Anna Kar-
enina," 2012).
Like most networks, HBO pro-
duces many pilots, and not all of
them get greenlit. The pilot for
"Succession" is set to film in New
York, directed by Adam McKay
("The Big Short," 2015).
A doubling of Dawsons: Ga-
briela's (Monica Raymund, "Lie to
Me") parents are coming for a vis-
it. NBC's hit firehouse drama "Chi-
cago Fire" premiered its fifth sea-
son last month, and it's already lin-
ing up guest stars and new charac-
ters.
Fulvia Vergel ("Hold the Door,"
2007) and Daniel Zacapa ("The
River," 2012) have been cast as
Gabriela's parents for an episode
that will air later this season.
They're not the first members of
Gabriela's family to be introduced
to the "Chicago" franchise, which
also includes the two spinoff
shows "Chicago P.D." and "Chica-
go Med." Her brother, Antonio,
played by Jon Seda ("Twelve Mon-
keys," 1995), is one of the main
characters in "Chicago P.D."
In the episode, scheduled to air
Tuesday, Nov. 29, the siblings'
parents visit the Windy City for
their anniversary during a time of
transition for their daughter; Ga-
briella has recently become a fos-
ter mother, and her brother is just
beginning a relationship with her
friend and co-worker Sylvie Brett
(Kara Killmer, "Beyond the
Mask," 2015).
The Chicago franchise has tied
together the three different dra-
mas using characters, settings
and relationships that transcend
any one show. Bringing in minor
characters with connections to
multiple shows strengthens the
link between the series. Gabriela
and Antonio's parents make their
debut in "Chicago Fire" later this
month.
