The Cowell touch: Simon
Cowell helped bring in more view-
ers to NBC's summertime talent
show than it has seen in years, so
the network is keeping him around
for at least three more. "America's
Got Talent," which has spent its
summers on NBC for 11 seasons,
saw its 2016 iteration achieve the
highest ratings numbers it's had in
five years, making it this past sum-
mer's highest-rated series for the
network.
All four of the judges from sea-
son 11 have signaled their inten-
tion to stick around for the next:
comedian Howie Mandel ("Deal
or No Deal"), British singer Mel B
("Dancing With the Stars"), model
Heidi Klum ("Project Runway")
and "America's Got Talent" creator
Cowell. Rapper and comedian
Nick Cannon ("Caught on Camera
With Nick Cannon") is also expect-
ed to return as the reality show's
host. Although Cowell is the origi-
nal creator of the show's format
and has served in a creative capac-
ity since its inception in 2006, he'd
never served as one of the show's
judges before the most recent sea-
son, despite being best known to
audiences for his time as a judge
on two other hit talent competi-
tions: "The X-Factor," which he
also created, and "American Idol."
NBC seems to be crediting
"America's Got Talent's" ratings
spike on Cowell's biting and bru-
tally honest commentary. Signing
him up for three more seasons is a
ringing acknowledgement of his
popularity with audiences, and of
the place in pop culture that "AGT"
has achieved.
Unlike the other competitions
that Cowell has judged, "Talent"
doesn't just stick to singing: it's a
full-blown talent contest, with
dancers, jugglers, magicians and
other acts that have to be seen to
be believed. With a $1-million
prize awarded to the winner, not to
mention the huge exposure that
winning a nationally televised
show brings, it's a safe bet that so
long as audiences keep tuning in,
"America's Got Talent" will keep
finding acts both brilliant and bi-
zarre.
'Succession' success: HBO's
latest drama pilot is finalizing its
cast. The premium channel is con-
stantly working on new shows,
hoping to hit on the next big thing
— after all, this is the network that
brought audiences "Game of
Thrones" and "The Sopranos."
