ABC is also no stranger to going where other net- works don't or won't: "Fresh Off the Boat," for example, was the first American prime-time sitcom in 20 years to feature an Asian- American family as the leading characters. The alphabet network once again steps outside of the realm of cookie-cutter comedy, this time with the premiere of "Speech- less," about a non-verbal teen with cerebral palsy and his family, airing Wednesday, Sept. 21, on ABC. Sure, it may sound like ABC is just setting up this series to be one of those standard inspiration shows about overcoming adversity and trying to fit in, but for Emmy- winning writer/producer Scott Sil- veri, who is best known for his work on "Friends," it's nothing of the sort. "It's not like 'the disability show.' We're telling family stories here," the show's creator said at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour last month. "At its core, it's a show about being dif- ferent and not apologizing for be- ing different and embracing who you are." Silveri, for his part, knows what it's like to be a part of a family with a special-needs child — growing up, his brother had cerebral palsy. He said at the TCA press tour that he has wanted to tell this story for years, but wanted to be careful about how he told it. "Part of the reason why it was a scary endeavor is it does announce itself in such a way," he said. "You just hear the lo- gline of a show with a kid with a disability, it suggests that 'After- school Special'-ness. That's why we were really vigilant about doing everything we could to subvert that as early as possi- ble." Early reviews suggest that "Speechless" does indeed buck the "woe is me" trope and fits well into the brand of laughs ABC has become known for. Part of that is due to the writing, and part of it is definitely due to the cast.
