Micah Fowl- er ("Labor Day," 2013) plays JJ, who wants to be as normal a teen as possible but needs someone to act as his "voice." (JJ uses a spe- cial computer he controls with his eyes to spell out words.) Fowler actually has cerebral palsy him- self, and told The Mighty (an on- line support community for peo- ple with disability, disease or mental illness) that he was excit- ed to raise awareness for people with special needs. "I am honored to have the op- portunity to play the role of a down-to-earth, normal teen living with the challenges of cerebral pal- sy, and I am thrilled to represent the millions of people living with special needs," he said. "In real life, I live every day conquering chal- lenges brought on by cerebral pal- sy. In addition to the physical chal- lenges, one challenge I have no- ticed is that sometimes people who have not met me seem un- comfortable around me. I hope as people watch 'Speechless,' they get to know JJ as a very normal person, to the point that they don't even see the disability." Silveri glowed about Fowler at the TCA summer press tour, giving some credit to the budding young actor for allowing a show like "Speechless" to get off the ground. "This is a story that I've been wanting to tell for 20 years," he said. "Without Micah's spirit and his performance and his energy, we don't get a chance to do that. ... He just lit up the screen. He was so effortlessly funny and endearing. He gave us everything we were looking for." Rounding out the cast are John Ross Bowie ("The Big Bang Theo- ry") as JJ's dad, Jimmy; Mason Cook ("Legends") as JJ's brother, Ray; Kyla Kenedy ("The Walking Dead") as JJ's sister, Dylan; and Ce- dric Yarbrough ("Reno 911!") as Kenneth, the custodian at JJ's new school who quickly becomes the "voice" that the teen has long been searching for. ABC hasn't been shy to break the mold when it comes to fresh new comedies, and the network's newest offering does just that. Fea- turing an actor with cerebral palsy in a central role, "Speechless" tackles what life is like for a non- verbal teen with special needs and his family, with a good dose of hu- mor mixed in. The series premiere of "Speechless" airs Wednesday, Sept. 21, on ABC. Micah Fowler stars in "Speechless"
