Those special people that loved us more than they love themselves. I remember spending the night with my Grandparents in that two story old farm house with only a wood stove downstairs. We jumped in that tick/straw bed and sank down with all those blankets piled on us. We could hardly move but we knew in the morning there was going to be a warm room and a big breakfast downstairs. I remember my grand- mother doing the twist with us just to make us laugh. I remember feeling loved and special. The same goes If you are a Grandparent, you know the love you have for your Grandchildren. There's nothing like it or can replace it! Times change and now most of our Grandparents and Elders live in a Nursing Home or Assisted Living Home. Can you remember the last time you were in a Nursing Home or Assisted Living Home? The Residents sit there waiting for a visit from someone to make them feel "Loved and Special." A lot of Residents have outlived their family members and don't have anyone to visit them. They have not forgotten how to laugh and have fun they just have no one to motivate or show them a reason to "Love" again. Let's take these thoughts and let me tell you of a very important program that not many people are aware of. The Program is called the Ombudsman Program. It is a result of the Older American Act in 1971 and amended in 1978 to Mandate that each county have a volunteer program in place that "advocates for the rights of older persons receiving Long Term Care Services in facilities." It was to establish volunteer programs to investigate poor quality as well as protect each resident rights. Cleveland County Commissioners established two Volunteer Boards to oversee this obligation. They are the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee and the Adult Home Care Advisory Committee. The Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee (NHCAC) is active and has eight members. The Adult Home Care Advisory Committee (AHCAC) currently has only one active mem- ber and cannot do the visits because you must have at least two people to complete the visits and reports. I know you see where I am going with this topic, but please don't stop reading yet. Volunteers are needed to advo- cate especially for residents in the adult care homes. Your love can be a powerful motivation to make a "big" difference in lives of residents! You can volunteer by applying online at the Cleveland County Commissioners Website under Boards and Committees. If you have more questions you can con- tact Mandy Johnson, Regional Ombudsman at 828-287-2281 X 1225. You can also contact Ginger Poteat, Volunteer NHCAC at 704- 472-1839.
