That means finishing a drill at practice, or finishing a drive or finishing games. It's all about finishing for the Pirates. Finishing has eluded Pewau- kee in recent years as the Pirates have lost three games by less than seven points including two one-point decisions. "We've got to get some things straightened out in terms of finishing football games," Pewaukee coach Justin Friske said. "The last two years are certainly not from a record standpoint where we want to be. "We were in position to win football games and didn't quite finish." Pewaukee finished 5-5 overall and 3-3 (fourth place) in the Woodland Conference West Division a year ago. The Pirates did make the playoffs for the 11th consecutive season, but lost in the first round. "I think right now the tenor of the team is pretty good," Friske said. "The seniors have done a pretty good job of stepping up but we have a lot of room to grow and we have to continue to emphasize that idea of finish- ing." With six returning starters on both sides of the ball the Pirates have more experience back than in recent seasons. The defense is led by senior end Blaze Beltran (6-3, 240) and junior nose tackle Seth Bickett (5-11, 213). Both players were first team all-conference a year ago, with Bickett earning hon- orable mention all-state status from the WFCA. "Blaze and Seth are going to lead the way on the defensive side of the ball," Friske said. "They are going to anchor the defensive line and put us in good shape. Our D-line has been a strength since I've been here and it should be again this year." Also back on defense are sen- ior inside linebacker Brandon Berg (5-11, 210), senior outside linebacker Sam Ramlow (6-1, 180), junior free safety David Young (5-11, 140) and junior strong safety Michael Miosi (6- 1, 184). Offensively, senior Carl Renz is back at quarterback after throwing for nearly 900 yards and 10 touchdowns, but he is being pushed by junior Josh Swanson (6-3, 158). "There is healthy competi- tion going on right now at quar- terback," Friske said. "We'd like to utilize the skills Carl has because he's an incredible ath- lete. If he wins the job, then we're going to have to dictate things offensively that go around Carl's skill set. If Josh wins the job, we're not going to shy away from using Carl in a lot of different roles. Both of them will probably play some during the year." Senior tackle Austin Lyons (6- 4, 286), senior center Ryan Beat- tie (6-1, 273), senior wide receiv- er Michael Walters (6-0, 173), Beltran at guard and Bickett at fullback are also returning starters on offense. The biggest area of concern for the Pirates offensively is finding running backs after first team all-conference back Alec Wandler graduated. "We're as big and athletic as we've ever been in my time up front," Friske said. "Our offen- sive line should be a strength when you look at the kids that are back and the body types that they have. That puts us in a good position for the offense that we run and we want to run the football. That's job one for our guys up front." Friske believes the Pirates have the talent to make some waves this season. "We have a chance to be a very good team," he said. "Everything has to go well and the stars have to align, but we are good enough to compete and win a conference champi- onship. I think it's going to fall on what direction the seniors want to take us. They've got to determine how we handle the tough times and what we do with adversity. It's a group of seniors that's had a lot of suc- cess." Pirates have plenty of experience back Pewaukee looks to finish off opponents this season Pewaukee Coach: Justin Friske, 5th season 2015: 5-5 overall (Lost in Level 1 playoffs), 3-3 Woodland Confer- ence West Division Key returning players: junior DT Seth Bickett; senior OL/DL Blaze Beltran; senior QB Carl Renz; sen- ior WR Michael Walters; senior OL Austin Lyons; senior RB/LB Bran- don Berg; junior DB David Young; senior C Ryan Beattie Promising newcomers: junior QB Josh Swanson; junior WR/CB Con- nor Vogt; junior TE Carlos Teran; senior OL Nathan Kolbow; junior DL Jarret Schmitz; senior RB Cris Albiter; junior OL Jordyn Kowalke Key graduation losses: Alec Wan- dler; Xavier Straub; Austin Shibilski; Evan Gard; John Carle. From Page 15 Schmidt, Paget and Hewitt form a formi- dable defensive line. Meleski and juniors Nate Artenian, Egan Iwanski and Joe Robey will fill out the secondary. Chossek says his team returns six or seven players who have experience on both sides of the ball, which means his play- ers have been through a lot of snaps at the varsity level. But it also means many players will play both ways again, which can be physically draining. "My personal phi- losophy is you've got to have your best 11 players on the field," Chossek said. Chossek isn't wor- ried about the team's record right now. He just wants his players to respond to the chal- lenges he gives them.
