By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post SOUTH MILWAUKEE — While South Milwaukee has garnered attention in recent years for such economic developments as bringing in big-box retailer Walmart, offi- cials are progressively and steadily touting a ramped-up effort in the heart of the com- munity. In recent years, Mayor Erik Brooks and the Common Council have been looking into creative ways of infusing new energy into the city's downtown commercial corri- dor. By Brooks' account, those efforts are beginning to bear fruit. He points to the continued popularity of the South Milwaukee Downtown Market on Thursdays, which is in its eighth year and has grown with new farm-based vendors and special events since its inception. As warm weather contin- ues to set in, a series of other special events are also on tap, including outdoor movie nights and carnivals revolv- ing around the popular trend of food trucks. The market has been a cata- lyst for a recent long-range planning effort that included input from an outside consult- ing firm, Graef. The results, Brooks said, have created a road map toward where city officials want to direct their efforts in the years ahead. "We've wanted this to hap- pen for a while," Brooks said of downtown revitalization. "We just didn't know how to get there." The multipronged approach toward revamping the down- town corridor includes a mar- keting push toward prospec- tive businesses, special events and a variety of spruce-up ini- tiatives, including the recent rollout of a facade grant pro- gram that is designed to improve the corridor's aes- thetics.
