from page 1 intendent Suzanne Blake said she sent out a posting on Tuesday about the open position. "We are looking at all of our options," said Blake. "It would be very nice if we were able to make a hire at our next school board meeting on June 20," said Blake. She said Whitehead was on a 210 day contract and had been working on sched- uling for the 2016 -17 school year. "Typically, there are some staffing changes that hap- pen over the summer. So it would be beneficial to get a new person in place for that. There is quite a bit that has to be done to get ready for the next year," said Blake. birthday. He was upset, he was young, he just knew I left on his birthday," said Williams. A fter two months in Geor- gia, Williams was allowed to come home for a few days be- fore they were shipped over- seas. They were flown to Ku- wait and after two weeks, moved into Iraq. During his 10 month de- ployment in Iraq, Williams drove an armored service vehicle escorting convoys most of the time. "Sometimes we did a turn and burn, where you go to pickup a convoy and come back. Sometimes we did ex- tended missions, where we would stay over night." "We pretty much went everywhere in Iraq. I went over next to the Syrian bor- der and up to Mosul." He said typically a 40 to 50 mile trip was one of the longer trips. "We took small arms fire all the time, but we were driving around in armored vehicles. An ASV was a lot safer than a Humvee." The biggest threat his group faced were IEDs (Im- provised Explosive Devic- es). "We were always on the lookout for IEDs. Our squad didn't encounter any or get hit by any. I would contrib- ute a lot of that to our Lieu- tenant. . . I truly believe he analyzed a lot of data and was very smart on the times we were allowed to leave. He calculated times for us to go. We did our job and we all made it home safely," said Williams. He said by 2008 the bas- es in Iraq were much more accommodating for soldiers than when they first went in- to Iraq. "We were fortunate to have phone services. Be- lieve it or not, we had Inter- net. When they first went in there, they didn't have any- thing. "I called my wife every- day or if I didn't, she knew I was busy. I don't think I ever went more than two or three days without calling." He said even when he couldn't call her, she was able to call him. He even had air-condition- ing in the ASV he drove and where he stayed, although it didn't work all the time. Despite the air-condition- ing, it was still an inhospita- ble place. "I'm an Indiana boy. The hottest temperatures I had ever seen were in Georgia during training," said Wil- liams. While Georgia in the summer can be miserably hot, it doesn't hold a candle to Iraq. "One day we saw 120 to 130 in the shade." He also remembers his first sandstorm. Williams described looking in the distance and seeing what looked like rain as it got clos- er to you. Except it is brown. When the first one he ex- perienced hit, he had not been on that base for more than a week. "We didn't know the whole base and now all of a sudden we can't see. Basically, the driver is trying to feel his way back to our buildings." He said sandstorms were as bad or worse than the worst fog you have ever experienced. "You could breath, but were more worried about what are we going to hit," said Williams about their trying to drive in the sandstorm. "You realize after being over there, how good we have it here. Life is good over here," said Williams. Life was tough for most Iraqis. "It wouldn't be any- thing to see a kid eight or nine years old herding sheep. I would say they had to grow up faster over there than here," said Williams. During his time in Iraq, he was given a two-week leave to come home. "I was fortunate to come home for two weeks. The hard part was going back again and leaving the family." He returned to the states in October of 2008, after spending six months in Iraq. When he got home, he could have taken a month before returning to work. In- stead he took a week and was back at work. He works at Muffler Mender in Loogoo- tee, where he has worked for more than 20 years, includ- ing his years before he was deployed overseas. He continued with the Na- tional Guard doing his week- ends and two weeks in the summer training. Then in June 2013, he retired with 20 years of service. Looking back on his time in the National Guard and the decision he made at 17 years old, he said, "I'm glad I went through it, definitely. I met a lot of good people. If I had to tell you the one thing I miss, it is the people I served with." Williams and his wife, the former Heather Head, were married in June of 2004. They have five children, ag- es 23 to 18. A fter retiring in 2013, Wil- liams joined the Winslow Fire Department and con- tinues to serve his commu- nity in a different way. A young Tony Williams with his gear in front of his National Guard locker. Williams, a resident of Winslow, served 20 years in the National Guard and did a 10-month deployment in Iraq during his military career. By Andy Heuring Four people were arrested on charges of drunken driv- ing and a fifth has charges pending a blood test. Two of the five were arrested after they had flat tires. Richard Lee Culbertson, 40, of 808 Charles St., Bick- nell was arrested on the Ayr- shire Road south of Winslow after he was involved in a fight. On Monday, May 23 at about 6 p.m. Pike Coun- ty Deputy Dallas Killian said he was asked to watch for a man on County Road 375S (Ayrshire Road) with no shirt and blood on his face. Deputy Killian said he and Reserve Deputy Travis Troutman located two men standing next to a pickup truck. They pointed toward a house and said Culbert- son had walked that direc- tion earlier. Killian said while talking to them, a four-wheeler with a man who wasn't wearing a shirt rode over a small hill and into a driveway. Killian said the four-wheeler then spun around twice in the gravel. So he followed it with his flashing lights on as it pulled into a driveway. Killian said it was Culbert- son driving the four-wheel- er. Culbertson told Killian he had gotten into a fight at the first residence Killian was at, but didn't want to pursue charges against that person. Culbertson failed field so- briety tests and was taken to the Pike County Jail. Deputy Killian said Cul- bertson was uncooperative while taking the test and did not provide a sufficient breath sample. He was ar- rested on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, refusal. A rural Holland man was arrested after he had a flat tire early Thursday evening. Michael Phillip Weit- kamp, 45, of 10350 E. Old State Road 64, was arrest- ed on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (refusal) with a prior. Pike County Deputy Sher- iff Paul Collier said he was notified of a possible intox- icated driver headed north on Highway 61 after con- struction workers said a big red-headed man driving a tan Ford King Ranch truck had stopped near a construc- tion site with a flat tire. They told police the man and his passenger appeared to be in- toxicated. Deputy Collier said while driving south on Highway 61 he noticed the truck going north with a broken wind- shield. He also knew Weit- kamp had a suspended li- cense. He stopped him just north of Winslow. Deputy Collier said when he talked with Weitkamp, he could smell the odor of alcohol. Weit- kamp failed field sobriety tests and was transported to the Pike County Jail, where he refused a blood alcohol test. He was preliminari- ly charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated refusal; driving while sus- pended and possession of an open alcohol container. A Petersburg man was ar- rested at about 8 p.m. Satur- day after he was stopped for speeding. Joshua James Vest, 30, of 3671 N. CR575 E., Peters- burg was arrested on a pre- liminary charge of operat- ing a vehicle while intoxi- cated and resisting law en- forcement. Petersburg City Officer Trent Ficklin stopped Vest on Highway 57 near Black- burn Road for driving 65 mph in a 55 zone. Deputy Paul Collier assisted with the stop and said he noticed Vest had blood-shot eyes and there were beer cans on the passenger side floor- board. Deputy Collier said Vest failed field sobriety tests and while police attempted to place him in handcuffs, Four arrested on drunk driving charges, more charges pending See ARRESTS on page 7
