American Legion District Oratorical Contest Left to right, Post 82 Commander Ned Cash; National Commander Dale Barnett; and Post 82 Contest Chairman Ludy Wilkie Gabe Turner of Ellenboro represented the North Carolina American Legion in the National High School Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis, Ind., in April. Gabe won the contest sponsored by Shelby Post 82 in January and advanced to win the state championship. A junior at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, Gabe received an additional $1,500 in scholarship funds for his efforts. He was accompanied to Indianapolis by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Turner; Post 82 Commander Ned Cash; and post Oratorical Contest Chairman Ludy Wilkie. In Indianapolis, they met with the National Commander of The American Legion, Dale Barnett of Georgia. Commander Barnett will visit Shelby for the American Legion World Series in August.
