Now it probably doesn't surprise some of the people who know me, but I honestly shake my head in wonder at my consistent ignorance to learn from the past. This ugly fact has raised its head several times during this turkey season. How can a somewhat seasoned hunter do things that he knows will not work? How can he keep thinking that he can keep doing the same thing, and get different results? How can he be me? If I sound a little perplexed, I am. Even though I've killed a few birds, I have made some bad decisions and have been too im- patient. I've missed several other birds as a result. After those misses I have set there empty-handed saying to myself, "What in the world were you doing?" I've had no answer. The afteref- fects have been noticeable. I can't quit shaking my head. In turkey hunting, these lame brain blunders only cause disap- pointment and frustration. In other areas of life the cost is much greater. There really does come a time when we all have to learn the lesson. We can't go on and on making the same mis- take over and over thinking a heartfelt "I'm sorry" will make ev- erything all right. Those that we hurt are not convinced our lat- est slip-up will be our last. But why? It's because we keep doing the same thing and expecting different results. Someone has called this the defi nition of insanity. For real change to happen there must be a radical detour from the direction we have been going. That radical detour will ultimately lead to making the right decisions when the moment of truth comes. I have counseled those who have claimed to be at the end of themselves. They tell me they are at the bottom and are tired of doing things their way. But when I tell them what they need to do, they make ex- cuses as to why they are unable to do it. It just proves they are not actually at the bottom or at the end of themselves. There is still something left they are holding on to. God is willing to radically take the reins of anyone's life. We must be willing to completely let go of everything without ques- tion. God, in turn, will begin to do the work in His power that we were unable to do in our own. Have you discovered a pattern in your own life? Is it one that has always led you down a path of pain? Why not give God a try? It may be a radical detour but it will always lead to a better outcome. I'd love to come speak to your group. Contact me for more information. Meet Austin Neal for example. Neal, now an accomplish wrestler as a senior at R-S Central and fi nished second at nationals this season, will head to Newberry College in the fall. However, it wasn't all that simple. Wrestling changed the young man's life. One day in seventh grade, Neal found out about wrestling. By eighth grade he was in love with the sport. That year, Neal went undefeated. The change wasn't in just the wrestler, but on a personal level as well. Neal admitted that he wasn't as focused in middle school, but when wrestling came to call, his grades went up and his attitude about life changed. Sometimes we don't see the simple things in life to understand what a sport can do for others. For Neal, it was wrestling. In his freshman year, his practice partner qualifi ed for state, and Neal barely missed out. Although, it didn't happen that year, Neal felt in his sophomore campaign that he could change that among the 113 weight class. "I worked extremely hard after my freshman year in the offseason to better myself on the mat and it paid off by fi nishing third in the state," Neal said. Neal's third place at state in his sophomore year pushed him to win back-to-back state titles during his junior and senior year. Neal was in the 113 weight class his junior year and then to the 120 in his senior year when he took home top honor in both. Then went to the NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach where he placed second overall in the 113 weight class. "I had a big target on my back this season and there was a lot more pressure at state then at nationals," Neal said. "I was expected to do well at state, but not as much at nationals." And it was at nationals that made his college aspirations much clearer. Schools took notice and mentally, Neal was ready for the task at hand in Virginia Beach. "I expected tougher competition in nationals, but it was a completely surreal to fi nish second at nationals," Neal said. "I never expected anything better than eighth considering who was there." Now that a stout wrestling school in Newberry College is in Neal's future, he's not forgetting about what he has learned from the past. "I think to be humble and to be willing to work hard are the biggest things I have learned in being involved with wrestling," said Neal.
