TVWeek May 1 - 7, 2016 • 19 By Andrew Warren TV Media N ot everyone likes to spend an hour every Saturday morning in the kitchen — after all, we all need a day off once in a while — but Food Network is making weekend kitchen time a whole lot more fun. That's because "The Kitchen" is going strong on those lazy Saturday mornings. The weekly cooking-themed talk show is currently in its ninth season, and unlike those of us who need a barrel of coffee to help open our dreary eyes in the morning, it isn't showing any signs of slow- ing down. In a format that's similar to "The View," "The Chew" or any of the other multi-host talk shows that are everywhere these days, "The Kitchen" has a panel of five hosts who discuss food trends, answer viewer ques- tions, host guests, play fun trivia games with each other and — of course — cook up some fantas- tic favorite dishes that are easy for viewers at home to replicate. A show like this lives or dies based on the chemistry be- tween its panelists, and with so many seasons behind it, "The Kitchen" obviously has had a full periodic table's worth of it. Its hosts include some Food Network favorites, including "Food Network Star" winner Jeff Mauro ("Sandwich King"), Sunny Anderson ("How'd That Get on My Plate?"), Marcela Val- ladolid ("Mexican Made Easy") and Geoffrey Zakarian ("Iron Chef America"), along with food critic Katie Lee. An extra little late-morning pick-me-up is often tossed in by Zakarian, too. "It's five 'o'clock some- where" is the chant as the expert mixologist shares some special tips with his co-hosts on how to make perfect cocktails and mixed drinks that can be paired with the many dishes featured in the show, or even enjoyed on their own. But this is the Food Network, and the real focus is always on the food. Recent episodes have seen international chef Judy Joo visiting to share her recipe for pork belly cheesesteak, the hosts helping to solve some viewers' greatest pie failures, and Zakar- ian celebrating spring with a spring fling cocktail. It's a lot to pack into a Satur- day morning, but not everyone can take the weekend off. "The Kitchen" airs Saturday mornings on Food Network.
