They're the big- gest fad for networks these days, but if you've got a successful product, why not milk it for a bit more story (and money, of course)? Rush Hour, the buddy-cop mov- ie trilogy starring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan, is one such franchise that amassed a huge following in the late '90s and early '00s, gross- ing more than $507 million at do- mestic box offices and almost $850 million worldwide. Now, CBS is cashing in on that success with its latest made-for-TV reboot, apt- ly titled "Rush Hour," which pre- mieres Thursday, March 31, on CBS. The movies were about two mismatched cops — Lee (Chan), a Hong Kong police inspector, and Carter (Tucker), an LAPD detective — who get into all sorts of hijinks while trying to solve a case, often due to their conflicting personali- ties and methods. Thanks in large part to Chan and Tucker's incredi- ble on-screen chemistry, the trilogy was an instant hit, and still ranks in the top 50 highest domestically grossing franchises of all time. The new TV adaptation raises a couple of key questions, first and foremost being: Will the TV show be a spitting image of the movies? That's an easy, straightforward one to answer, and Justin Hires ("21 Jump Street," 2012), who steps into the role originated by Tucker, explained in an interview with TheSource.com that after the pilot episode, they branch into two distinct things. "The pilot episode is essentially a reboot of the first 'Rush Hour' film," he said, "however, every ep- isode after that (13 episodes in to- tal) are completely new and excit- ing stories that are not related to the movie franchise." Show creator/writer/executive producer Bill Lawrence ("Scrubs," "Cougar Town") elaborated fur- ther at the Television Critics Asso- ciation press tour in January. "[S]hows change after the pi- lot," he said. "We can't do the movie over and over for five years. ... I think it's a valid question, be- cause were we to repeat the pilot week in and week out, even though I do believe it's a great way in, I think the show would fail. And so I'm pretty proud of the trajecto- ry it does, and I expect this show to be on next year because I'm pretty confident about it." The second key question is: Will the two new leads be able to live up to the iconic performances by Tucker and Chan? This one's a little Feature this week
