Mine squeeze my forehead, and make it hard to let annoy- ances and disappointments go. The Spin- ning bike is turned backward so I have to ride into a beige wall for an hour when all I wanted to do was zone out and get rid of tension?! I have to completely redesign that booklet because you changed your mind about the number of pages, and you want the updated version within an hour?! There are tomatoes on my hamburger?! Little things build up. But, you know what helps? Looking at photos of manatees with sayings like "You're right. They're jerks" and "I'd hug you if I had arms" typed beneath their cuddly bodies. A good friend recently sent me a link to these images when I needed a little stress relief (www.calmingmanatee.com). That combined with some Buena Vista Social Club, and all was well with the world again. Something else that works when trying to slide into a better mood is good food. Whether cooked by mom or from a recipe shared by a friend, or consumed at a favorite restaurant, good food makes people happy. In this issue, we focus on food – a pair slewis@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 235 ADVERTISING Sean Lewis spollak@thedailystar.com, (607) 432-1000, ext. 208 EDITOR OF THE DAILY STAR Sam Pollak Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service 2 O-Town Scene May 10, 2012 The O-Town Scene will publish on Thursday, June 7, which is a different publication date from its usual second Thurs- day of the month schedule. CHANGE TO PUBLICATION of owner-chefs who are offering elevated dishes at two area restaurants, our Top 10 Food Songs Playlist and recipe-paired articles from two of my closest friends in Oneonta, who generously contributed them pro bono. Christina Ceisel wrote a thoughtful commentary on the "food moment" we're having in popular culture and the influence her Cuban/German background has had on her food preferences. That, along with her recipe for sofrito, is on Page 11. Emily Ernsberger, who has been contrib- uting recipes to the Scene almost since its beginning two years ago, is a bit of a super- woman. Not only is it the busy season at her job at Hartwick College, but her bridal shower and bachelorette party were last weekend. And when I emailed her Monday to see if she would submit a recipe for this issue, she whipped up some gazpacho soup, and sent me a photo and article by that evening. Friends and coworkers contributed dozens of song suggestions for the food playlist. It was hard to eliminate Led Zeppelin's "The Lemon Song," Louis Armstrong's "Strut- tin' with Some Barbecue," Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Buttermilk Biscuits" and lots of others, but only 10 could make the cut. The chosen 10 are on Page 14, including a new favorite, Squeeze's "Pulling Mussels from the Shell." Food and friends make everything better. I hope you enjoy this issue, and that you get some ideas for dinner with friends – at one of our center-spread duo's restaurants or cooked at home. Thank you for reading.
