H.G. Wells sparked a fascination with the idea when he pub- lished his wildly popular novel "The War of the Worlds" in 1898, and since then, countless books, movies and television series have been made on the subject. The genre may be flooded with extraterrestrials, but one sci-fi TV series is making its mark with nary an alien in sight. Set in near-modern day, USA Network's "Colony," which airs a new epi- sode Thursday, Feb. 25, picks up months after a (presumably) alien force took over Los Angeles. The invading force constructed an enormous wall around the city and established a military occupation using human collab- orators known as Redhats and Proxies. They also utilize drone aircraft to keep tabs on the humans and enforce their rule, but the aliens themselves are never seen. It seems far-fetched, but creator Carlton Cuse ("Lost") talked about the very real connotations of the invaders at last year's San Diego Comic-Con panel promot- ing the show. "This mysterious invading force comes down, puts up these walls, installs a proxy govern- ment," explained Cuse. "We thought a lot about the analogies to other places that are under for- eign rule or occupation, whether it's the United States installing a government in Afghanistan or Iraq, and this idea that almost ev- ery other country in the world has either been a colony or a coloniz- er was very fascinating to us." It's a heady concept, but Cuse is no stranger to ambitious televi- sion — he was an executive pro- ducer and joint showrunner for ABC's groundbreaking television series "Lost," a gig that earned him the distinction of being one of 2010's most 100 influential people in the world, according to Time magazine. Cuse teamed up with screenwriter Ryan J. Condal ("Hercules," 2014) to create "Colony," and recruited a familiar face to star in the project. "Lost's" Josh Holloway portrays former FBI agent Will Bowman, who is separated from his 12-year-old son during The Arriv- al. Desperate to reunite with his boy, he tries to infiltrate the Colo- ny Transitional Authority. Unfortunately, the plan goes awry and Bowman is captured.
