IDEAS AND COLORING FOR ADULTS By Cindy Petty Press-Dispatch Staff staff@pressdispatch.net If you're looking for an inexpensive, yet creative hobby, consider coloring. It doesn't matter if you're two – or 72 – there are plenty of coloring books and pages just for you. My sister has been col- oring for years. She sim- ply bought the coloring books that caught her at- tention, then used color- ed pencils and gel pens to make it look pretty. She told me that it helped her to re- lax. Who knew my baby sis- ter was a trend-setter? The adult coloring craze caught on around 2015 and many of the major publishing compa- nies are now offering a va- riety of coloring books for adults and teens. Accord- ing to a recent Fortune arti- cle, adult coloring books are one of the biggest contribu- tors to this year's boost in print-book sales. With over 11,000 search results, four of Amazon's current top 20 best-selling books are color- ing books. Instead of cray- ons, some folks have been known to use colored pen- cils and even water colors. I recently went in search of some South Gibson color- ers and found them at the Fort Branch Public Library. Jan McGrew, a clerk there, said: "We began our 'Col- oring Fun For Adults and Teens' (class) about four months ago. We meet once a month, usually the first Tuesday of the month, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m." Adults and teens are encouraged to bring their own coloring books or pages, and mark- ers, pens, pencils and cray- ons. If you just want to try the hobby for one night, the library will be glad to give you access to their color- ing pens and let you choose a coloring page from one of their many coloring books. Most folks who color agree that it helps relieve stress. Maria Barker ,of Fort Branch, said: "It's very relaxing and fun coloring at the library. I get to meet people and share." Others in the group said that coloring helped them relieve stress and anxiety. According to an article in The Huffington Post, coloring can stimulate areas of the brain related to motor skills, creativity and the senses. Other sources confirm that it can help quiet the mind and relieve stress. Here's how the Oak- land City-Columbia Town- ship Library pitched their "Adult Coloring Night" on their Facebook page back in Sept.: "Come enjoy the latest stress-busting trend for grown-ups – coloring parties. We will have a qui- et space, beautiful patterns, coloring pencils and light refreshments while we en- joy a peaceful hour of color- ing. This program is FREE to anyone who would like to attend. We ask for no chil- dren in the coloring room; however, kids over the age of eight are welcome to play in the library while you relax and color your cares away. Please invite your friends, we are looking forward to this event! " As it turns out, they've got another one scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. Adult and teen coloring books differ from the chil- dren's and preschoolers because the drawings are more complex and intri- cate. Many of the coloring books aimed at the adult market are designs rather than characters or people. Some coloring books fea- ture best-selling movie or television themes such as Lord of the Rings, Batman, Game of Thrones, Star Wars and many others. Coloring books can be found in book- stores, retail stores, depart- ment stores and on shopping sites such as Amazon.com. There are also hundreds of websites that allow you to download coloring pages for free. Others encourage you to just doodle and color your doodles. Here are a couple of websites you can try: www.easypeasyandfun. com/free-coloring-pages- for-adults/ www.redtedart. com/2015/09/05/free-col- oring-pages-for-adults-25 - gorgeous-sets-to-choose- from/ Oh, and you can get a pack of 96 Crayola crayons for just $7.99. If all else fails, you can give them to your grand- kids. If you give adult coloring a try, send me an email at staff@sgstartimes.com. Color It Yourself Since newsprint isn't exactly the best to color on, it's probably best if you make a copy of this sample adult coloring page first and then give it a try if you're so inclined. The verse at the center is John 3:16. Fort Branch Library clerk Jan McGrew tries her hand at adult coloring. The branch offers an "Adult and Teen Coloring Night" the first Tues- day of the month from 4 to 6 p.m., and can pro- vide colored pens and pages for first-timers. Cin- dy Petty photo
