He said they both have numer- ous bruises, but no broken bones. According to the Indiana State Police news release, the Wrights were taken to Daviess Community Hospi- tal and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Eckes was taken to the Daviess Community Hos- pital, where he was treated for a neck injury and then he was taken to the Knox County Jail, where he is fac- ing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, theft and reckless driving. The State Police news release also states Eckes crashed when he was at- tempting to turn south on- to Highway 57. Davis disputes this. He said Eckes was attempting to go around the road block. "He didn't slow down at all, there was no way he was try- ing to make the turn. He was just trying to go around the road block." "I'm just glad God was with us. If things had gone just a little different, there would have been bodies here," said Davis. increase. Klipsch said the apprais- al would only change when the land use changed. "You can farm that for as long as you want." However, he said if the property is sold to a devel- oper and the property use changes from farm ground to business development, then the assessment and taxes would probably in- crease. Pike County Growth Council Director Ashley Willis said financial institu- tions typically won't finance projects in unzoned areas. She also said nine out of 10 site developers will remove a site from consideration if it isn't zoned. City Attorney Brian Ma- honey used the example of a developer building a ho- tel near the interchange and then an adult bookstore moved in next door. "How many people would want to stay at that hotel? " Cathy Miller asked Klipsch if the city couldn't just pass an ordinance to prevent that. "This is the ordinance," said Klipsch. Stone also asked about getting a portion of farm ground rezoned to Busi- ness 3 instead of residential. Klipsch told him the property located in the ar- ea where zoning is being ex- tended could be amended immediately, but the prop- erty that was in the area al- ready zoned would require a variance request. Jeff Davis asked why the Sturgeon property was in- cluded in the proposed zon- ing and the former Carl Sha- fer property was not. Klipsch said the Stur- geon property had access to the sewer line and the Sha- fer property did not. He ex- plained the city has to pro- vide two utilities to an area for it to be included in zon- ing. The map and an amend- ment to change the Stone property to B-3 was ap- proved. They then voted to recommend to the Peters- burg City Council to ap- prove the zoning ordinance. Petersburg Mayor RC Klipsch points to the area on Petersburg's zoning map where it will be extend- ed if the Petersburg City Council approves a proposed ordinance extending zoning to the I-69 inter- change at Tuesday night's meeting. Willis arrested on meth charges after being stopped on fire lane By Andy Heuring An Otwell man was ar- rested after police found him driving on a fire lane with a child on his lap, as well as meth and a gun in his truck. Nathaniel E. Willis, 34, of 8617 E. SR 56, Otwell, was arrested Friday after- noon by Conservation Of- ficers Blake Everhart and Dustin Cary on charg- es of possession of meth, possession of parapherna- lia, possession of a legend drug injection device, pos- session of a firearm by a domestic batterer, expired registration and false and fictitious plates, as well as neglect of a dependent. According to the officers reports, they saw Willis driving a minivan on Fire Lane 8 with a small child on his lap. They stopped him and during their search of the vehicle, they found drugs and paraphernalia. The child was placed with Child Protective Ser- vices. By Andy Heuring Pike Central seventh grader Simon McCrary was a finalist in the Tri-State Spelling Bee on Saturday at Ivy Tech. McCrary said he finished 12th in the contest that pitted 140 southern In- diana spelling bee champi- ons against each other. McCrary was one of about 30 finalists. He said they each took a written test with 15 spelling questions and 15 vocabulary questions. The top scorers from the written test advanced to the spelling test. He spelled seven words before running into a word that stumped him. "It must have been on a list I didn't study. I hadn't heard the word before and I don't remember it. It started with a 'ch' but I don't really know the word," said McCrary. The contestants are given a booklet with all the words they could be asked to spell. He said there are numerous lists of words, typically list- ed as words from different cultures and different lan- guages. McCrary qualified for the Tri-State Spelling Bee by be- ing the Pike Central Middle School Champion. He is the son of Neil and Debra McCrary, of Peters- burg.
