FAFSA filing begins Feb. 21 with deadline March 10 Financial aid profession- als will be volunteering at 42 sites in Indiana to help college-bound students and their families open the door to financial aid during Col- lege Goal Sunday. The event is set for 2 p.m. (local time), February 21. The free program assists Indiana students in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges, uni- versities and vocational/ technical schools nation- wide. The FAFSA must be filed by March 10 to be eligi- ble for Indiana financial aid. College Goal Sunday is so important since completing this required form correctly and by the deadline is some- times perceived to be com- plicated and time consum- ing. In less than one after- noon at a College Goal Sun- day event, students and their families can get free help and file the form online. WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD BRING Students should at- tend College Goal Sun- day with their parent(s) or guardian(s), and parents' should bring completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 Forms and other 2015 in- come and benefits informa- tion. Students who worked last year should bring their income information as well. Students 24 years of age or older may attend alone and bring their own completed 2015 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 Form or other 2015 in- come and benefits informa- tion. Students and parents are encouraged to apply for their U.S. Department of Education FSA IDs at fsaid. ed.gov before coming to the event. Volunteers will walk through the online form line-by-line and answer fam- ilies' individual questions as needed. All sites offer FAF- SA online capabilities and many have Spanish inter- preters. A complete list of sites is available at College- GoalSunday.org. Attendees may win ed- ucational prizes. Students who attend any of the Col- lege Goal Sunday sites and submit a completed evalua- tion form will automatically be entered in a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship. The winners will be notified in March, and prizes will be sent directly to the higher education institution select- ed by the winning students. 21ST CENTURY SCHOLARS BENEFIT 21st Century Scholars are income-eligible stu- dents who sign a contract in the seventh or eighth grade promising they will gradu- ate from high school, meet grade point requirements, fulfill a pledge of good cit- izenship, and apply for col- lege financial aid. Upon high school graduation, scholars who have fulfilled the com- mitment receive state funds to help cover their college tuition and fees for eight semesters at eligible Indi- ana colleges. To fulfill their pledge, scholars must sub- mit a completed FAFSA form on time. College Goal Sunday can help. For more information about College Goal Sunday visit CollegeGoalSunday.org. Girl Scout cookies arrive in county Girl Scout cookies arrived in Pike County on Tuesday. More than 300 cases of cookies were un- loaded Tuesday afternoon at the Sts. Peter and Paul Church building. Once unloaded, Sandy McBeth and Cindy Sermersheim then separated the 323 cases of 12 boxes each into what each of the five Girl Scout troops in Pike County sold. "Once we divide them into troops, then we divide them into what each girl sold," said McBeth. The Girls Scouts will also be out at various locations around the county selling cookies over the next few weekends. McBeth said she has been helping with the cookie sales for 35 years. From allergens to anodes: pollen derived electrodes Pollens, the bane of aller- gy sufferers, could repre- sent a boon for battery mak- ers: Recent research has suggested their potential use as anodes in lithium-ion batteries. "Our findings have dem- onstrated that renewable pollens could produce car- bon architectures for anode applications in energy stor- age devices," said Vilas Pol, an associate professor in the School of Chemical En- gineering and the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University. Batteries have two elec- trodes, called an anode and a cathode. The anodes in most of today's lithium-ion batteries are made of graph- ite. Lithium ions are con- tained in a liquid called an electrolyte, and these ions are stored in the anode dur- ing recharging. The researchers tested bee pollen- and cattail pol- len-derived carbons as an- odes. "Both are abundant- ly available," said Pol, who worked with doctoral stu- dent Jialiang Tang. "The bottom line here is we want to learn something from na- ture that could be useful in creating better batteries with renewable feedstock." Research findings are detailed in a paper that ap- peared Friday (Feb. 5) in Na- ture's Scientific Reports. Whereas bee pollen is a mixture of different pollen types collected by honey- bees, the cattail pollens all have the same shape. "I started looking into pollens when my mom told me she had developed pol- len allergy symptoms about two years ago," Tang said. "I was fascinated by the beau- ty and diversity of pollen microstructures. But the idea of using them as bat- tery anodes did not really kick in until I started work- ing on battery research and learned more about carbon- ization of biomass." The researchers pro- cessed the pollen under high temperatures in a chamber containing argon gas using a procedure called pyrolysis, yielding pure carbon in the original shape of the pollen particles. They were further processed, or "activated," by heating at lower temper- ature – about 300 degrees Celsius - in the presence of oxygen, forming pores in the carbon structures to in- crease their energy-storage capacity. The research showed the pollen anodes could be charged at various rates. While charging for 10 hours resulted in a full charge, charging them for only one hour resulted in more than half of a full charge, Pol said. "The theoretical capac- ity of graphite is 372 milli- amp hours per gram, and we achieved 200 milliamp hours after one hour of charging," he said. The researchers tested the carbon at 25 degrees Celsius and 50 degrees Cel- sius to simulate a range of climates. "This is because the weather-based degradation of batteries is totally dif- ferent in New Mexico com- pared to Indiana," Pol said. Findings showed the cat- tail pollens performed bet- ter than bee pollen. The work is ongoing. Whereas the current work studied the pollen in only anodes, future research will include work to study them in a full-cell battery with a commercial cathode. "We are just introduc- ing the fascinating concept here," Pol said. "Further work is needed to determine how practical it might be." Electron microscopy studies were performed at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discov- ery Park. it takes 3 minutes to subscribe to Call 812-354-8500
