The Press-Dispatch Finding the right extracurricular activity than ever before. Be it the increasingly competitive nature of scholastic life or the increase of two-income households where kids need something to do oth- er than come directly home after school, children today are much busier than their school-aged counterparts of yesteryear. While it can be fun and Today's kids are busier instance, a child who's shy in public but loves hamming it up at home might embrace an after-school theater pro- gram. Once options have been beneficial for kids to par- ticipate in extracurricular activities, finding the right fit isn't as easy as it sounds. When helping kids find an extracurricular activity, it's best to consider a host of factors. Especially keep in mind that not all kids are the same with respect to inter- ests. And what was enjoyed by their parents won't nec- essarily be enjoyed by them. to speak to kids about their interests. Just because Dad loved playing football doesn't mean Junior is destined to be a gridiron great. Kids have their own interests, and those interests can be cul- tivated with the right extra- curricular activity. For exam- ple, a creative child might en- joy an after-school art class a couple of times per week. Parents should also consid- er extracurriculars that can help kids grow as people. For GETTING STARTED The best place to start is discussed with kids, take in a session or two before com- mitting to anything. The shy youngster might visit the lo- cal theater program and en- joy it thoroughly, or he or she might decide against it. Either way, a visit will give kids and parents a sense of what the program is like and whether or not it's the right fit. When visiting, observe the nature of the program. Is it an encouraging, vibrant environment? Do the adults and kids involved appear to be having fun? GET THE 411 to be as safe after school as they are during it. When looking for an extracurricu- lar activity, inquire about the staff-to-child ratio and about the staff's professional back- ground. Any staff-to-child ra- tio that is greater than 12:1 likely indicates a program that is understaffed, which could mean kids won't get the attention they need. Also, ask for the staff's references and work history in the field of child care. If certification is necessary or recommend- ed, make sure the staff meets all requirements. Parents want their kids Simple ways to ease the 'ouch' Sunblock—and its ade- quate reapplication—is one of the single most effective ways to prevent sunburn and a host of sun-related maladies. De- spite the warnings of skin cancer and ailments related to the sun, people succumb to sunburn year after year. The results can be quite painful. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Pre- vention, getting sunburned even once can make a per- son more likely to get skin cancer. Though it can be that simple to increase risk for skin cancer, there's actu- ally quite a lot going on be- hind the scenes when a per- son gets a sunburn. The very outer layer of the epidermis, or the outside-most skin, is made up of dead skin cells. Directly below them are liv- ing skin cells that can be damaged when ultraviolet light from the sun penetrates these living cells and eventu- ally kills them off. Once the body senses the dead cells, the immune system springs into action. White blood cells are sent to the area to repair damage, which involves in- creased blood flow. This blood flow makes the skin red and warm. Furthermore, the damaged skin cells send out chemical messengers that ac- tivate pain receptors. This is why sunburned skin is red, warm and painful. There are different reme- brief showers can reduce the temperature of the skin. • Aloe gels often soothe dies for alleviating the pain associated with sunburn. While there are some over- the-counter analgesics that will temporarily numb pain, some of the best treatments are simple and natural. • Cool water baths and quire about program costs. Though many programs are upfront about fees, some have hidden fees that can add up. Such fees can be for uniforms, equipment, class trips, etc. Extra fees don't have to exclude a program from consideration, but it's better to know about them in advance than have them come as a surprise. Parents should also in- GRADE LEVEL CONSIDER brimmed hat, UV-protection clothing, and sunglasses and avoiding the sun during peak hours are ways to remain comfortable and healthy. level should also be consid- ered when choosing an ex- tracurricular activity. Con- sult teachers about finding an age-appropriate extra- curricular activity. For ex- ample, less competitive ac- tivities that emphasize fun might be more appropriate for kids in kindergarten and the first grade. For second graders, activities not of- fered at school, like learn- ing to play an instrument, can help cultivate a child's interest in a noncompetitive environment. As kids reach third grade and beyond, con- sider more rules-based activ- ities, including team sports, as kids at that age are more capable of understanding rules and handling losing than younger kids. As chil- dren get older and move on to middle school, look for ac- tivities that reinforce learn- ing and help develop a young person's character, includ- ing their ability to interact with others. When looking for an extra- curricular activity for kids, parents should consider a host of factors, including the child's interests and age.
