Spring is here and so is allergy season for many B-8 many things. The return of baseball. The smell of fresh- ly cut grass. Warmer weather. While many things we asso- Spring is synonymous with ciate with spring give us good feelings, the dreaded return of allergy season is anoth- er thing that comes to mind when thoughts turn to spring. Sniffles, sneezing and gener- al discomfort are all too com- mon even for those with rela- tively mild allergies. Though allergies might be a nuisance, they don't necessarily have to be much more than that. WHAT IS IT? response of the immune sys- tem that occurs when the An allergy is an abnormal immune system reacts to a usually harmless substance present in the environment. The substance is known as an allergen and, upon expo- sure, the body feels this sub- stance is dangerous, releas- ing chemicals like histamine to protect itself. That release can result in sneezing, red and itchy eyes, rashes, or a run- ny nose, among other things. The body's response is an al- lergic reaction. One very different allergic reaction is anaphylaxis, a po- tentially life-threatening re- sponse that requires imme- diate medical attention. Ana- phylaxis is a whole-body re- action, one that can include hives and itching all over the body, wheezing or shortness of breath, tightness or hoarse- ness in the throat, and even tingling feelings in the hands, lips, feet, or scalp. WHAT MIGHT I BE ALLERGIC TO? is always a good idea to deter- mine what you might be aller- gic to. But keep in mind some of the more common things both kids and adults are al- lergic to dust mites, feathers, pollen, dairy or pet dander. While things like pet dan- A visit to the local allergist der and dairy aren't exclusive to spring, dust and pollen tend to be more prevalent and prob- lematic throughout the spring season. One study highlighted in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immu- nology in late 2007 followed the progress of more than 800 children with milk allergy. In that study, only 1 out of 5 chil- dren outgrew milk allergy by age 4, and less than 50 per- cent had outgrown milk aller- gy by age 8. By age 16, near- ly 80 percent had outgrown milk allergy. While this might be encour- According to the Allergy aging for parents of children with milk allergies, no two allergies are the same. Pea- nut allergy, for instance, does not necessarily disappear or weaken as a person gets old- er. So while it appears possi- ble to outgrown an allergy, it's certainly not a guarantee, and those diagnosed with a giv- en allergy should continue to consult with their physician. WHAT TRIGGERS MY ALLERGY? tors can trigger an allergy. • Pets. Those with an al- A host of preventable fac- lergy to pet dander can avoid visiting friends or family members with pets. If that's not an option or if you have pets of your own, keep them out of the bedroom or off the furniture. • Dust. Dust allergies are common, and the best way to combat them is to keep a clean house. Place pillows in the dryer, wash sheets in hot water, use dust mite covers on mattresses and furniture, and vacuum regularly. Sweep- ing might help pick up random debris, but it's not effective on its own when fighting dust, as it will simply move the dust around the room. • Mold. Many people are allergic to mold, and one can prevent exposure to this aller- gen by using a dehumidifier in damp areas, such as the base- ment, and running the bath- room or shower fan for up to 15 minutes after bathing.
