By MATT MASTERSON Conley News Service MENOMONEE FALLS — It was 1995 when Shaquille O'Neal said he became "pric- ing conscious." The retired NBA super- star was in the midst of a multiyear endorsement deal with Reebok, which paid him several million dollars annually, when he was approached by an elderly woman he had never met who "tore (him) a new one" over the price of his prod- ucts. "I didn't know what to do, I had some money in my pocket at the time and was like "Here you go ma'am, I don't make the prices,'" he said. "She smacks the money out of my hand and says 'Why don't you make something that's afford- able?'" O'Neal said he had a chance to renew that con- tract, but opted out, instead deciding to make his own line of shoes that didn't come with the sticker shock of some other name brands. On Friday, the four-time NBA champion made a spe- cial appearance at Kohl's Corporate offices in Menomonee Falls to announce his clothing line will be made available through the retailer begin- ning next year. "I'm a big Kohl's guy, I've been shopping there for years," he said during a press conference Friday. "I know it'll definitely make my mother happy — she spent a lot at Kohl's this Christmas break — trust me, I know, I'm paying for it." The 2000 NBA MVP, who starred for the Los Angeles Lakers in the early 2000s, spent more than an hour Friday speaking with media and entertaining Kohl's associates during a special event at the company's Innovation Center. His clothing line was made available at Macy's last year. In addition to shoes, O'Neal's line also includes suits and jewelry at a cost that doesn't price-out families struggling finan- cially. Ryan Festerling, Kohl's executive VP of human resources, said the items will be made available on Kohls.com by September of 2016. "We are focused on deliv- ering amazing products for our customers, and we're excited for him to introduce that line to you," he said. Shaq approached Kohl's about a possible deal, according to Festerling, who said the 7-foot-1 center hard- ly went unnoticed around the corporate campus. "You can spot that guy from a mile away," he said. "Our people are so excited to have him here."
