The Green Bay Packers are a mess. They are going to the playoffs. They have had another good season. But they are still a mess. Nobody understands what's going on with the team because no one understands what's going on with the normally great offense and the even better quarterback. I don't understand. You don't under- stand. More importantly, the Packers play- ers and coaches might not understand. Even if they do, it's clear they don't know how to solve the problems. Every year with quarterback Aaron Rodgers it's been the same plan for success. The offense will be great and if the defense and special teams hold up their end of the donkey, then the Packers have a good chance to win the Super Bowl. This year, the defense and special teams have been good enough to support a phe- nomenal offense toward a possible Lombardi Trophy. It doesn't matter because someone stole the great Packers offense and their Hall of Fame quarter- back. I'll admit that I'm acting as a keen observer of the obvious. Everyone knows the offense isn't what it used to be. The assumption was that the Packers would eventually figure something out and excel- lence would return. This dilemma has been going on for weeks and the only logical assumption is that it's not going to change. So, if it's not going to change, there's no way the Packers can win the Super Bowl or even get to the Super Bowl. They might not even advance to the NFC Championship game. They could lose their first playoff game. No one knows because there has never been a playoff team like this with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. It used to be that all the other teams wondered why they couldn't do it as easily as the Packers' offense. Now I'm watching all the other receivers get wide open for every team — even the bad ones. After another Packers game with closely guarded receivers on every play, Sunday night I watched the Arizona Cardinals on their first offensive play with a receiver more open than any Packers receiver in the entire game. James Jones had a great game even though he's never open. He is amazing every time he has a fantastic game because he never has any separation from the defensive back. He had the easy wide-open touchdown only because the Raiders had a blown coverage. Jones should be the offen- sive MVP because he is the perfect symbol of this year's offense. On an offense in which the receivers never get open, the best one should be the best ever "never really open" guy. It's possible that the offense could catch fire and carry the team the rest of the sea- son. Rodgers is the current MVP. He could start playing like Russell Wilson has been playing for Seattle the last five weeks with a quarterback rating averaging 140. John Kuhn is playing more and his blocking helps protect Rodgers and also improves the running game. Jared Abbrederis is get- ting open and if he plays more, as suggest- ed by Rodgers, it should improve the pass- ing game. Tight end Andrew Quarless is finally back from his injuries and his return will help the offense. I know. And if if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. Nothing has happened in recent weeks to make anyone believe that the great offense will return. Everyone can hope but no one can think that the Packers can do something special with the defense and special teams carrying the offense to a great post-season. It's all so different. With Aaron Rodgers anything is always possible, but I wouldn't bet on it. If some- thing great happens, I'll be the first to admit that I didn't see it coming.
