Tony Zielinski, an alderman in Milwaukee's 14th district, said in a statement that it makes sense to house sex offenders at the state-owned Ethan Allen facility, which has remained vacant since it closed in 2011. Zielinski's statement followed recent media reports on new possible legislation aimed at mak- ing it more difficult for sex offenders to be placed out- side of their county. According to a CBS 58 report on Friday, one of the bill's authors, Rep. Michael Schraa, R- Oshkosh, "thinks using state-owned facilities like the old Ethan Allen Juvenile Center in Waukesha County could help" the problem of sex offender placement. Now, Zielinski is saying he will prepare Milwaukee Common Council legislation in support of housing sex offenders at the former Ethan Allen building, though he said he had not seen any formal proposal from Schraa detailing such an arrangement and was basing his statements on media reports. Schraa said his bill "does not have anything to do with the vacant Ethan Allen Boys facili- ty." "While I did mention to a reporter last week that Ethan Allen might make an interesting transitional living location, our bill says noth- ing about this facility," he told Conley News Service via email. Still, Zielinski touted removing offenders from residential areas and placing them in the state-owned facility. As is, he said, communi- ties "have to play hot potato with each other" because "no one really wants offenders in their neighborhood."
