B-2 Sports Wednesday, December 23, 2015 The Press-Dispatch proudest of, however, was the 29 points scored by North Daviess – the least number of points the Lady Chargers have allowed under Warner's tenure since a 37-31 win over Loogootee this past January. "Defensively, we did a very, very nice job," Warner said. "We're going to win if we hold teams to 29 points every game." The win, in fact, marked the 11th straight victory by Pike Central in games in which it has allowed 35 or fewer points since a 33-30 sectional tour- nament loss to Washington to end the 2010 -2011 season. In doing so, the Lady Char- gers held Brooke Moore – a 6 -foot senior center who scorched them for 27 points and 12 rebounds in the Lady Cougars' 50 -40 win a year ear- lier – to just six points and six rebounds. For the game, Moore was 0 -for-9 from the floor and 6 -for-8 from the free throw line. "That's who we talked about the last two days," Warner said. "We did a very nice job on her as a team. She didn't have a field goal on the night. She made six free throws but, other than that, we limited her on the floor." "We stuck to the game plan," Warner added. "We were going to front her – we were going to deny her the basketball wherever she's at – and we did a good job of do- ing that, trying to make some- body else beat us." Fortunately for the Lady Chargers, North Daviess had few other options as the rest of the Lady Cougars made 10 of 31 field goal attempts, a 32.3 percent average. "Sometimes we can say, okay, we played good defense, but that's just because we got a bunch of steals and a bunch of intercepted passes, things like that," Warner said. "But tonight, we didn't do that, es- pecially the first half." "It wasn't about us getting steals," Warner continued. "It was about us playing full pos- sessions on the defensive end. They'd get a shot up, we only gave them one shot. We got the rebound and then we go, so we were playing defense the entire time and doing things the right way. So, as far as that goes, it was good." A basket by Hendrixson, a three-pointer by sophomore Demi Croak and a pair of free throws by Nalley gave Pike Central a 7-0 lead with 6:19 left in the first quarter. Trailing 11-4, North Da- viess scored three straight points – on a basket by junior Abby Cecil and a free throw by Moore – to pull to within 11-7 with 1:03 remaining in the opening period. However, the Lady Char- gers answered with a three- pointer by senior Alyx Abbott, a basket by Hendrixson and a free throw by sophomore Nat- alie Bohnert to extend their lead to 17-7 with 6:31 left in the second quarter. A fter a basket by North Daviess freshman Aundreya Corwin cut the deficit to 17- 9, two baskets – including a three-pointer – and two free throws by Hendrixson sparked a 9 -2 scoring run that stretched Pike Central's lead to 27-11 with 1:52 remaining in the first half. Following two free throws by Moore, a basket by senior Cheyanna Padgett gave the Lady Chargers a 29 -13 half- time lead. Pike Central then scored the first six points of the sec- ond half – on baskets by Nal- ley, junior Jo Whitehead and Abbott – to extend its lead to 35 -13 with just under four minutes left in the third pe- riod. Cecil scored eight points as North Daviess answered with a 9 -2 scoring run to pull to within 37-22 with 6:43 re- maining in the fourth quarter. However, following an ex- change of baskets, the La- dy Chargers scored seven straight points – on a three- pointer and a basket by Hen- drixson sandwiched around a basket by Nalley – to stretch their lead to 46 -24 with 2:52 left. North Daviess, which fell to 6 -7 with the loss, could get no closer than 19 points the rest of the game. Hendrixson hit seven of 11 field goal attempts – includ- ing two of three tries from beyond the three-point act – and was 2-for-2 from the free throw line while pacing Pike Central in scoring. "She played pretty well," Warner said of Hendrixson. "When she makes jump shots, she's tough to guard because not many bigs can come out on the floor with her. She did a very nice job as far as knocking shots down within the flow of the offense. A cou- ple of them were forced, but those are the shots that when they go up you say, 'Oh, no,' and then they go in." "As long as she's making them, that's good," Warner added. "But I thought she did a very good job working the middle, on defense especially, trying to guard (Moore) the whole game. She did a very nice job." Whitehead led both teams in rebounds with seven while Stone grabbed six. Hendrix- son and Nalley added five re- bounds each. Abbott dished out three assists while Nal- ley also had a game-high sev- en steals. "She's constantly around the basketball," Warner said of Nalley. "A couple of times the first half, she turned it over and, before they could get it across half court, she'd get it back. She brings a lot of effort. She rebounds the bas- ketball well. She comes fly- ing in and she's really athlet- ic and she jumps a lot high- er than most people. Ener- gy-wise, I thought she did a pretty good job." "But as a team even, to- night I felt like we were in proper position as far as be- ing in lanes, being where we needed to be," Warner added. "We blocked out a lot better as far as getting our butts in people and getting them out of there. Overall, it was a very nice team win." For the game, Pike Central hit 19 of 51 field goal attempts – a 37.2 percent average – and made six of 10 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 15 times. The Lady Chargers also had 14 offensive rebounds, which they were able to con- vert into nine points. Cecil paced North Daviess with 17 points and three steals. Moore had six re- bounds, two steals and two blocked shots to along with her six points. For the game, the Lady Cougars hit 10 of 40 field goal attempts – a 25 percent aver- age – and made eight of 11 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 18 times. "We had five things on the board that we needed to take care of tonight and we com- pleted four of the five," War- ner said. "The one we didn't get was to shoot 15 free throws or more. But we out- rebounded them, we won the turnover battle. I thought we did a good job getting 50 -50 balls. We accomplished most of the things we were trying to." • In junior varsity action, freshman Allesha Sisk scored a game-high 10 points as Pike Central defeated North Da- viess 35 -13. Freshman Hailey Marchino added five points in the winning effort while sophomore Halley Powers and freshmen Emily Carna- han, Becca Crow and Alyssa Jenkins tossed in four points each. Sophomore Sarah Yod- er led the Lady Cougars with four points.
