James Capozella photo\ By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior Tyler Toopes scored a game-high 22 points and sopho- more Bryant Nalley made his first seven field goal attempts while add- ing 18 points as the Pike Central High School boys' basketball team posted a 68 -48 victory over host North Posey on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Chargers, who improved to 5 -0 overall and 2-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference, never trailed, scoring 10 of the game's first 11 points – on three baskets by Toopes and one each by junior Gabe Elliott and Nalley – in the first four min- utes of the opening period. "We had good energy," Pike Cen- tral head coach Jason Roach said. "I thought we had good energy at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. We were ready to play." North Posey, which fell to 0 -5 overall and 0 -2 in the PAC, rallied briefly, outscoring the Chargers 7- 2 – thanks, in part, to back-to-back Pike Central turnovers – to pull to within 12-8 with 1:30 left in the first quarter, forcing Roach to call a time- out. "I felt like we were being a little careless with the basketball," Roach explained afterward. "We were try- ing to force the tempo, but we were playing maybe a little too fast. We were playing 120 miles an hour, not just 100 percent. So we wanted to call a timeout and just refocus." "I think it was a good timeout," Roach added. "We came out and did a good job after that." Indeed. A fter Toopes and North Posey senior Austin Graves traded three- pointers, the Chargers scored 11 straight points – on a three-pointer and a basket by junior Trey Worni- ca, two baskets by Toopes and one by Nalley – to stretch their lead to 26 -11 with 5:22 left in the second quarter. During that stretch, the Vikings attempted – and missed – just one field goal and turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions. Leading 29 -16 following a pair of free throws by North Posey soph- omore Jacob Sanford with 4:12 re- maining in the first half, Pike Cen- tral stretched its lead to 18 points – on a basket by Elliott and a three- pointer by Toopes – with 2:30 left before the intermission. A pair of free throws by junior Noah Scheller pulled the Vikings to within 34-18, but a pair of free throws by Elliott to end the scoring in the first half and a three-pointer by Toopes to open the second half extended the Chargers' lead to 39 - 18. North Posey cut the deficit to 18 points – at 47-29 – with 2:24 left in the third quarter before a three- point play by Nalley and a three- pointer by junior Chase Davis sparked a 9 -3 scoring spurt that stretched Pike Central's lead to 56 - 31 early in the fourth period. The Vikings would pull to within 17 points – at 62-45 – with 2:16 re- maining before the Chargers ended the game with a 6 -3 scoring run on two free throws by senior Ty Hick- ey, two free throws by Davis and a basket by senior Dalton Riley. For the game, Pike Central con- verted six of North Posey's nine turnovers into a total of 13 points – including 10 points on five of the Vi- kings' six first-half turnovers – and out-rebounded North Posey 27-10, including 10 offensive rebounds that the Chargers converted into eight second-chance points. "We've got some guys who can go up and get it," Roach said. "We practice it a lot. We teach it to be very physical." "We know that that's a stat col- umn that we want to win because it's an important stat of the game," Roach added. "The teams that can control the boards generally come out on top. So we want to make sure that we are always doing that, no matter what. I thought we did a nice job tonight." Three Chargers – Davis, Elliott and Toopes – dished out four as- sists each as Pike Central totaled 17 assists on 25 made baskets, two of which were put-backs following offensive rebounds by Nalley and Wornica. "We were definitely moving the ball around pretty well," Roach said. "One thing I thought we did was hit the offensive boards real- ly well, also. I don't know if Bryant Nalley missed a shot until there to- wards the end. He was really effec- tive down low, posting well, seal- ing well, and hitting the offensive boards, also. I thought we execut- ed just overall offensively and we did a nice job." With four of North Posey's five starters standing 6 -foot or short- er, Roach said that the Chargers – with four starters standing 6 -foot-1 or taller – sought to take advantage of their height advantage while also focusing on containing 6 -foot-6 Vi- king senior center Grant Scheller. For the game, Scheller was held to just six points and two rebounds before going to the bench after pick- ing up his fourth personal foul with 1:13 left in the third period and nev- er returning. "We wanted to put pressure on their guards, but we wanted to make sure that we also knew where he was inside," Roach said. "He's a big kid, he has some nice post moves, and we walled up real nicely. We even came with a double- team here and there." "Offensively, we went ahead and took advantage, whether it was Toopes, whether it was Nalley, Gabe, even (senior) Levi (Tryon) when he was in the game," Roach added. "I thought we did a nice job working the ball inside and we did a nice job of passing it in there, too. Sometimes, we work hard and we're open and we don't get them the bas- ketball. Tonight, we missed a few opportunities, but more often than not, we hit them." Elliott added nine points in the winning effort while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Davis, Wornica and junior Colton White tossed in five point each, with Hickey and Riley rounding out the Chargers' scoring with two points apiece. Toopes had six rebounds and a team-high two steals while White dished out three assists. For the game, Pike Central made 25 of 41 field goal attempts – a 61 percent average – and hit 12 of 17 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over nine times. The Chargers attempted nine shots from behind the three-point arc, hitting six – two by Toopes and one each by Davis, Nalley, White and Wornica. "We took advantage of our athlet- icism," Roach said. "We took advan- tage of some mismatches. We had some mismatches down in the post and we really pounded it in and that opened up for some outside shots. We didn't really settle for any shots. We took a couple here and there that were probably rushed, but, for the most part, we executed the of- fense pretty well and took advan- tage of mismatches and took it at them inside." Sanford paced North Posey with 13 points while Graves added 11 points. Graves and Noah Scheller led the Vikings in rebounds with two each while senior Trent Weber had two steals. For the game, North Posey made 17 of 44 field goal attempts – a 38.6 percent average – and hit seven of 11 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over nine times. The Vikings attempted 20 shots from beyond the three-point line, hitting seven – three each by Graves and Sanford and one by Bender. The win gave Pike Central its first five-game winning streak since the Chargers also won five straight – against Vincennes Lincoln, South Knox, Southridge, Washington and North Daviess – during the 1998 - 99 season. In addition, the 5 -0 start is the program's best since opening the 1997-98 season with 10 consecu- tive wins. "We're trying to win every game," Roach said. "These confer- ence wins are nice. It puts you in the top of the conference. We've got a tough conference. We've got a lot of tough teams in there. We're just try- ing to build each day and get better. That way, we can stay up on top. We just want to keep it rolling." • In junior varsity action, soph- omores Justin Blackburn, Corey Heath and Alex Stewart scored 12 points each while sophomore Jor- dan Goedde added 11 points as North Posey defeated Pike Central 63-55. Sophomore Cameron Hen- son paced the Chargers with 22 points. Sophomore Tyler Tormohlen added 17 points.
