Ed Cahill photo By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Freshman Natalie Bohnert broke – for the third time – her own school record in the 100 -yard but- terfly as the Pike Central High School girls' swim- ming team defeated visit- ing Evansville North 108 -75 on Thursday, Dec. 17. Having already placed first in the 200 -yard indi- vidual medley with a time of 2:29.08, Bohnert won the 100 -yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.92, besting her previous school record time of 1:06.68. Bohnert, who broke the school record set by Betha- ny Byrd in 1994 in her first- ever high school meet on Nov. 23, now owns the four fastest times in the 100 -yard butterfly in school history. "She's a hard worker," Pike Central head coach Jason McKinney said of Bohnert, who has also set new school records in the 200 -yard freestyle, the 200 -yard individual medley, the 100 -yard freestyle, the 500 -yard freestyle and the 100 -yard backstroke. "She comes in and gets after it and she does all the right stuff." Junior Maya Frederick – whose school record time in the 200 -yard freestyle was among those broken by Bohnert – placed first in the 200 -yard freestyle with a time of 2:19.82 and first in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 1:14.93. "It's nice to have some- body like Maya to be there with (Bohnert), too, to work with her and have somebody to help her," McKinney said. "Maya's a junior and I con- sider her one of our leaders on the team. Having a fresh- man to have that much suc- cess has to have somebody to help her out, also. Maya does a great job with that. I'd love to see both of them get up in the top of the PAC and the sectionals, both." In addition, Bohnert and Maya Frederick teamed up with sophomore Cass Cond- er and junior Kaitlyn Foster to place first in the 200 -yard medley relay with a season- best time of 2:12.07 and with sophomores Quin Bai- ley and Brittany Young to place first in the 200 -yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:58.18. Bailey also placed first in two individual events, win- ning the 50 -yard freestyle with a time of 30.07 seconds and first in the 100 -yard free- style with a time of 1:05.33. "She knew that she didn't have her best swims, and that's going to happen some nights," McKinney said of Bailey. "But she did good enough to win what she had to win." "There's some little things we have to work on," McK- inney added. "The 50 -yard freestyle is a race that you have to be perfect in. It's a short race and everything has to click – just a couple of things out of sync and it won't get you your best. But I think we've got plen- ty of time to work on stuff and, come PAC and section- al times, she'll be ready." Conder also placed first in the 100 -yard breaststroke with a personal record time of 1:27.25, besting her previ- ous PR time of 1:28.10, and third in the 100 -yard free- style with a personal record time of 1:09.43, besting her previous PR time of 1:13.06. In addition, junior Sylvia Henson placed first in diving with a score of 199.50 points. Placing second in an in- dividual events for the Lady Chargers was Henson in the 50 -yard freestyle with a time of 30.78 seconds. Also placing third in in- dividual events for the Lady Chargers were Young in the 200 -yard individual medley with a time of 2:54.20 ; Fos- ter in the 50 -yard freestyle with a time of 30.85 seconds and in the 100 -yard butterfly with a time of 1:21.09; soph- omore Courtney Frederick in the 500 -yard freestyle with a personal record time of 7:06.66, besting her previ- ous PR time of 7:09.93, and in the 100 -yard breaststroke with a personal record time of 1:29.83, besting her pre- vious PR time of 1:30.33; and sophomore Shania Cre- means in the 100 -yard back- stroke with a time of 1:22.30. Placing fourth in indi- vidual events for the La- dy Chargers were senior Helen Dudenhoeffer in the 200 -yard freestyle with a personal record time of 2:39.33, besting her pre- vious PR time of 2:42.02, and in the 100 -yard butter- fly with a personal record time of 1:24.37, besting her previous PR time of 1:24.47; Young in the 500 -yard free- style with a time of 7:11.21; and sophomore Gretchen McCrary in the 100 -yard breaststroke with a personal record time of 1:32.38, best- ing her previous PR time of 1:34.89. In addition, the team of Bailey, Cremeans, Court- ney Frederick and Hen- son placed second in the 400 -yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:48.93; the team of Cremeans, Duden- hoeffer, Courtney Freder- ick and Young placed third in the 200 -yard medley re- lay with a season-best time of 2:25.73; the team of Cond- er, Dudenhoeffer, Foster and freshman Lillie Pancake placed third in the 200 -yard freestyle relay with a sea- son-best time of 2:07.88; and the team of sophomores Al- ly Davis and Emillee Hal- derman, McCrary and Pan- cake placed fourth in the 400 -yard freestyle relay with a time of 5:30.51. With the win, the Lady Chargers improved to 13-2 on the season. "I feel that we've done re- ally well," McKinney said. "Every meet we're having, they're having really good times. Everybody's putting really good swims togeth- er and everything's really quickened for them right now. If someone's time might not be their best or right at their best, there's someone behind them pick- ing it up a little bit, so they're helping each other out and they're doing some good things." Pike Central will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Castle, then return home to host North Daviess and Gib- son Southern on Monday, Jan. 11, and Vincennes Lin- coln on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Winter camps for high schoolers offered by VU baseball team The Vincennes University baseball team will host its 2016 Pitching/Catching/Hitting Camps for high school age play- ers on Saturday, Jan. 9, and Saturday, Jan. 23. The camps allow high school age players to showcase their skills for collegiate coaches while also receiving in- struction from the UV coaching staff and players in small groups. The camps will be conducted in two two-hour sessions both days. The first session will be a pitching and catch- ing camp from 10 a.m. to noon. The second session will be a hitting camp from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The camps will be held in VU's Beless Gym, located at the intersection of Indianapolis Avenue and Chestnut Street. In the event of cancellation due to inclement weath- er, the camps will be held on Sunday, Jan. 10, and Sunday, Jan. 24, respectively. The cost to attend either the pitching/catching or hitting camp is $50. The cost to attend both sessions on the same day is $ 80. However, the fees increase to $ 60 and $ 90, re- spectively, after Jan. 5, for the first camp and after Jan. 19 for the second camp. Fees are non-refundable; if a registered camper can't at- tend, the fee will be applied to a future VU baseball camp. All players should bring indoor/outdoor shoes, glove, hat and pants. Catchers will need to bring their own equipment. For information on how to obtain a registration form, or for questions or additional camp information, contact As- sistant Coach Cole Vicars at 812-888 -4429 (office) or 812- 870 -7481 (cell) or by email at cvicars@vinu.edu.
