Candidate for State Rep, 2nd
District
2248 W. 24th St., Chicago
Alex Acevedo is one of five
brothers in a large extended fa-
mily. He grew up and still resides
in Pilsen, where he is running to
represent the 2nd district in the
state house.
Acevedo's formative years and
his numerous mentors while he
was a student at Whitney Young
Magnet High School shaped him
early in life to become a leader
and an advocate for those who
cannot speak for themselves.
After attending University of
Illinois at Chicago with a major
in kinesiology, and graduating
from Chamberlain College of
Nursing with a B.S. in nursing,
Acevedo began his career on the
pediatric floor of St. Anthony's
Hospital in the West Lawn neigh-
borhood. He then spent four
years on the trauma and trans-
plant floor of the Ann & Robert
H. Lurie Children's Hospital.
In addition to his work in
healthcare, Acevedo has served
on the Chicago Scholars As-
sociation Board, which provi-
des mentors for minority high
school seniors. He also began
the "Young Achievers" program
to support working parents in
Pilsen who did not have a pla-
ce for their children to go after
school, offering mentorship,
tutoring and cultural outings to
students.
Acevedo is now running
for the seat his father, Edward
Acevedo, has filled in the state
house's 2nd district since 1996.
The younger Acevedo wants to
be an advocate for the people,
focusing on issues facing young
and old, like adequate health
care. He says he knows the fight
isn't at the hospital, it's in Sprin-
gfield, and he is ready for the
challenge.

An aspiring state rep
"I
've always been a public
servant for the community.
From pediatric nursing, to
community activist; my belief is
that public service is more than
policy, it's a call to take action."
