José Abreu got his start in
Cienfuegos, Cuba before joining
Major League Baseball as a free
agent in 2013. Since his arrival in
Chicago in 2014 as the White Sox
first baseman and designated
hitter, Abreu has made his pre-
sence known in a big way.
The Cuba native became
the first rookie in major-league
history to rank among the Top
5 in his league in each Triple
Crown category and won the
2014 American League Rookie
of the Year and the Silver Slug-
ger Award.
His success continued in
2015, earning a pair of co-Ame-
rican League Player of the Week
honors in August and Septem-
ber. He also became the second
player in major-league history
to record 30 home runs and 100
RBI in each of his first two sea-
sons.
Off the field Abreu launched
Abreu's Amigos with the Eas-
ter Seals Metropolitan Chicago
Therapeutic School and Center
for Autism Research. The com-
munity program included four
group outings to U.S. Cellular
Field, where Easter Seals stu-
dents enjoyed a White Sox game
and had the opportunity to
develop social skills in a recrea-
tional setting. Abreu also pro-
vided financial support for the
program, a $10,000 donation he
announced prior to a baseball
clinic on the school's White Sox
Field in June.
When Abreu joined the Whi-
te Sox it was under a six-year, $68
million contract.
