The Press-Dispatch Silver Dollar, Stellar Grants top Petersburg Council meeting ings, property for sale and the Stellar Grant process were all topics for the Pe- tersburg City Council and Boards at Monday nights meetings. The Silver Dollar Saloon Bad sidewalks, bad build- By Mike Johansen and its proceedings were again a topic of discussion for the City Council and Board of Public Works and Safety as well as other un- safe buildings within the City of Petersburg. The city discussed the house on Sycamore Street that will to be torn down as soon as the contrac- tor gets to it. The own- er, Jamie Brown, has a ca- shiers check ready to pay Ice Construction as soon as the demolition is done. The City Building Author- ity issued an order after its March 21 meeting saying the building must be torn down within 30 days of that meeting or within the next 17 days. They still have not seen any action by Ice to tear it down. The Silver Dollar Sa- discussed properties the city owns on Knox Street between 12th and Cherry. Neighbors are interested in buying the property to use it for a yard. The Council discussed their desire to use the property for a new home over using it for a yard. However, that may not come about for years. They decided to have the over the Stellar Grant pro- cess and a few changes in the grant application they are preparing. He said the meeting on March 29 was well attended. The City Council also loon was discussed again and the hold up right now is what is to be done to the buildings right next to it owned by Randy Harris of Harris Real Estate. The Pe- tersburg Building Authori- ty did issue a 30 day order for starting work at tear- ing down the building for the current owner, Amy Casey. However, she is fi- nancially unable to have the work done and has agreed to turn the property over to the city or another buy- er. The city's goal is to tear down what is left of the Sil- ver Dollar Saloon as soon as possible, but no later than this summer. The hold up right now is waiting for Harris, contractors and his insurance company to de- termine what must be done to the building next door to secure the wall and make it usable again. There is al- so some work to be done to the building housing Sweet Stuff that was caused by storm damage. The city is looking to take over ownership in the future as soon as some li- ability questions are an- swered. There is concern about the insurance compa- ny covering the neighbor- ing building and who they might seek damages from. City Code Inspector, R.C. Petersburg could be part of a new Historic Baseball trail in Indiana. It would include stops in Hunting- burg, Jasper, Evansville and other areas with base- ball history. The stop in Pe- tersburg would include the Gil Hodges mural and his boyhood home within the town. If that becomes a re- ality, a plaque of some type would need to be placed outside the home where Hodges lived while his fam- ily resided in Petersburg. He is a graduate of Peters- burg High School. The mayor also said he is matter researched and pre- pared for public sale with the attorney preparing what is needed. Final ac- tion would be at the next meeting in two weeks. Mayor Craig said that in the process of obtaining quotes for new signs at the highway entrances to Pe- tersburg. Andy Robling of Newburgh, is working on this project through a re- gional leadership program. The sign company origi- Klipsch, said they are seek- ing information about the contractor for work on the Harris building and would also seek price quotes on demolition of the Silver Dollar Saloon. Mayor Jon Craig went Glenn were at the Board of Public Works and Safe- ty meeting to ask for help with the bad sidewalk in front of their property at 301 South 14th Street. They want to have the sidewalk torn out and they would plant the area with grass and include it as part of their front yard. The sidewalk is beyond repair and is dangerous. The city does not have any plans to put in a new walk at this time as there are no walks on the adjoining property either. The change would fit in with the other prop- erties around them. The Board voted to approve having city staff tear out the sidewalks and the Glenns would take care of preparing the land for nally making signs for the FIT Trail in Petersburg backed out and a new com- pany has been found and the signs should be up in the near future. Jeremy and Megan City Hall was discussed as Blueriver and Frontier Communications have put the blame on each other. The service to City Hall has been bad and they hope to have a resolution soon. Frontier did check out their line on Monday and said it was good and the problem was not theirs. The Board also dis- talked about the sidewalk and the Stellar Grant appli- cation. The mayor did say they made some changes on the truck route around the downtown area to take the less expensive option. The Board was told the cussed the sidewalk where Home Building Savings Bank is going to build a new bank for a little over $1 million. They wanted to put in a cement walk. They are getting two bids on the project; one with a cement walk and one with the de- sign similar to the Stellar Grant work in the down- town area. That would make it compatible with the work to be done un- der the Stellar Grant if the city would be a recipient. They are also working with Home Building about a do- nation for the Stellar Grant work and this might be in- cluded. The City Council also planting of grass. The mo- tion was approved, but no time line was set for the work. It would be done when staff are available. A lien will be made against the property for $1,032. 50 for the work. The property is up for tax sale. The mayor reported the Petersburg Fire Depart- ment received a generator from Golden Living Center worth between $12,000 and $13,000. They replaced the generator for their building in Petersburg and gave the old one to the Fire Territo- ry for their use.
