C-3 Wednesday, April 4, 2012 H Geraldo's point Continued from page 2 that Irish neighborhood dressed like a black work- ing man would be dressed— and I never had the slight- est trouble the whole three years that I was at Harvard. While I had a right to behind me at night. Fortunately for both of us, walk through that tough neighborhood dressed in a Brooks Brothers suit, if I wanted to—and if I could have afforded one, which I couldn't—it made no sense for me to court needless dan- gers. The man who shot the he froze in his tracks when I pointed a gun at him. If he had made a false move, I would have shot him. And if it had turned out later that he was unarmed, I would not have lost a moment's sleep over it. You know that someone Court report The Press-Dispatch was unarmed only after it is all over. If he attacks, you have to shoot, if only to keep the attacker from getting your gun. It so happened that the black teenager in Florida may be as guilty as sin, for all I know—or he may be innocent, for all I know. We pay taxes so that there can be judges and jurors who sort out the facts. We do not need Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or the President of the United States spout- ing off before the trial has even begun. Have we forgot- ten the media's rush to judg- ment in the Duke Universi- ty "rape" case that blew up completely when the facts came out? If the facts show that a teenager who was no threat to anyone was shot and killed, it will be time to call for the death penalty. But if the facts show that the shooter was innocent, then it will be time to call for peo- ple in the media and in poli- tics to keep their big mouths shut until they know what they are talking about. Playing with racial polar- ization is playing with fire. Much has been made of the fact that the teenag- er was unarmed. The only time I have ever pointed a loaded gun at a human be- ing, I had no idea whether he was armed or not. All I knew was that I could hear his footsteps sneaking up man I pointed a gun at was white. But he could have been any color of the rain- bow, and it would not have made the slightest differ- ence. Let the specific facts with count I, operating a ve- hicle while intoxicated, con- trolled substance, a class C misdemeanor; possession of schedule II controlled substance, a class D felony; count III, possession of par- aphernalia, a class A misde- meanor; and habitual sub- stance offender. Have we forgotten the Jim Crow era, with courts mak- ing decisions based on the race of the defendants, rath- er than the facts of the case? That is part of the past that we need to leave in the past, not resurrect it under new racial management. Who is really showing tions for intrastate proba- tion, transfer from Daviess County. Misdemeanor Docket Pike Circuit Court concern for the well-be- ing of minority youngsters, Geraldo Rivera who is trying to save some lives, or Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and others who are hyping this tragic episode for their own benefit? Race hustlers who hype paranoia and belligerence are doing no favor to minor- ity youngsters. There is no way to know how many of these youngsters' confronta- tions with the police or oth- ers in authority have been needlessly aggravated by the steady drumbeat of ra- cial hype they have been bombarded with by race hustlers. H Restore fiscal sanity Continued from page 2 beyond fixing. It must go. Even if Obamacare were constitutional (and it isn't), it makes a bad fiscal situa- tion far worse. It adds tril- lions in new spending— and billions in new tax hikes. It massively broad- ens a broken Medicaid program. It takes a failed price-control model for Medicare—and expands it. And it introduces a new subsidy scheme that is fi- nancially unsustainable. "We must make our choice between economy and liberty or profusion and servitude," Jefferson writes. "If we can prevent the government from wast- ing the labors of the peo- ple, under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy." Lawmakers should heed the words of our third president—and have the courage to steer us off the path of financial misery. The consequence of this evil- imagination was the flood. After the flood God reminds us that, although He had de- stroyed the world, the root cause of this destruction— an evil imagination—could not be destroyed by merely a flood: ". . . and the LORD said in his heart, I will not Continued from page 2 again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth . . . (Genesis 8:20-21). The "new atheists" argue that the world would be a better place to live if there were no religion. I think I shall write them and point out that there are such par- adises already on earth. I FACEBOOK CONNECT Each week comment on a new topic.
