The Chargers will be By Mike Johansen without Colton Reed, the No. 1 golfer the past three seasons as he is now play- ing for Vincennes Univer- sity and is leading that team. He was their low medalist in a recent tournament with rounds of 78 and 75. His leadership and low scores will be missed. Stepping into the No 1 po- of our better golfers when healthy and we expect him to lead the team this sea- son," said the coach. The second senior with experience on the varsity is Colin Mahoney. He has played a lot of varsity and the coach expects him to be among the top four golfers on the team this spring. "He has lettered for the Char- gers and we expect him to turn in a lot of good scores. He has the ability to be our No. 3 golfer," said Arnold. Levi Richardson is a ju- sition will be either a senior. Levi Loveless, or a junior, Levi Richardson, accord- ing to Coach Steve Arnold, starting his 16th or 17th season. "I have been head coach quite a few years, 16 or 17, and I enjoy working with these young golfers. We work hard to improve their games, but we always try to have a lot of fun while playing competitive golf. We try to make it fun for all the players no matter what their skill level is and we always try to help them improve," said Arnold. A former Char- ger and Oakland City Uni- versity golfer Shawn Warner is the assistant coach. He is also now a full-time business teacher at Pike Central. He was the No. 1 golfer for the Chargers and the Mighty Oaks team. He has a lot of knowledge about golf and works well with the kids. "It is wonderful to have him back as the assistant coach" added Arnold. Loveless is in his fourth work on shooting better and have a goal to score around 160 each match (for nine holes). It may be a couple of strokes below, which will be good, or a little higher. It de- pends on the course we play as well," said Coach Arnold. "I feel this team needs goals to work toward and that is one of them." "We have some good nior and will challenge for the No. 1 spot on the team. He has turned in some good scores during the past sea- son and has the chance to earn the No. 1 spot or be in at number two. "We always have competi- tion between our golfers for each spot on the team. Oth- ers could unseat these two if they shoot lower scores, but I think the Levi's are our top golfers this season. Richard- son has the ability to shoot the lower scores we need to meet our team goals. He has worked to become a better golfer and was one of our top four every match last season," added the coach. Taylor Gwaltney is the third senior, but has little varsity experience. "He was new to golf last year and is working hard to improve his game. He will challenge to be one of the top six on the varsity team," said Coach Arnold. year of golf for the Chargers and is vying for the No. 1 position. He and Richardson probably will trade back and fourth in the top two spots on the team depending on who is playing better at the time. Of course, just because you are the No. 1 golfer does not always mean they will be the low scorer for the team. It just depends on how well they play that match and we expect the Levis to be right there close to each other each match," said Coach Arnold. overcome some injuries as he has had back problems that have limited his swing at times. Coach Arnold believes he is doing well and primed to have a good spring of golf. "We expect him to provide us with the senior leadership that this team needs. He has three years of varsity experience and has always been one Loveless has also had to is Tyler Dawson, a junior. He played a lot of varsity as a sophomore and should be one of the top six again this season. "He has worked on lowering his scores. We have been working with him on his swing to keep him from hooking and so far this spring he has looked better. The extra work is helping him," said the coach. He has a brother Logan Another returning golfer Dawson, a freshman, who is also on the golf team. "He show some signs of being able to shoot good scores and could be a factor," added the coach. Others back this spring with mostly JV experience include Jeffrey Norrick, Kyle Keepes, Clay Cunning- ham, Alex Keepes, Laron Griffith, Clayton Hill and Austin Hanebutt. Newcom- ers include Ty Smith, Kaleb Hill and Caleb Freeland and Austin Dixon. Everyone who is return- ing is a little better this spring. We are going to looking freshmen and soph- omores. No one has stood out yet, but they are each working on their game and we could see them step into the line-up. Everyone will get a match or two of varsity experience. I like to have every player play under the pressure of a varsity match to see how well they will do. This will help us to see who may standout and join the varsity as the fifth and sixth players on a regular basis. "We expect to have a re- ally good season and chal- lenge in each match, but we expect the kids to have fun out there playing and en- courage them to have fun," said the coach. "By the time we get to the conference meet we should have a solid six top players. We hope some of our freshmen and sophomores will step up and fill in the fifth and sixth spots and maybe challenge for the top four spots. "We hope to be in good shape by early May and make a good run at the PAC title. It is held at Christmas Lake Golf Course in Santa Claus and that is al- ways a tough course to play and a challenge for each of our players." The Chargers were fifth at the PAC last season with a 351 total and Colton Reed was fifth in the medalist list as a senior shooting 79. "This team hopes to bet- ter that score and move up in the PAC standings if not challenge for first place," said Arnold. Levi Richard- son was second low at the PAC at 86 and Loveless had a tough day shooting 90. In the Sectional the Char- gers were ninth shooting 363 and hope to improve that score when it is held in early June at the Coun- try Club of Old Vincennes. Reed shot 81 and advanced to Regional as an individual. Only the top three teams ad- vance and Coach Arnold has hopes his players will ma- ture and score well by then and make a challenge for one of those three positions and a spot in the Regionals at Country Oaks near Mont- gomery. able at the PAC Tourna- ment and in the Sectional. This team has a chance to be among the top teams if they develop and refine their games by that time," said Coach Arnold. "We will need for our three through sixth players to step up and improve each match and for solid scores out of our top two players each week. We will work on getting better each week and work on im- proving the game of each player. I know when players become a senior they sud- denly become more focused because they realize this is their last chance to shine on the golf course for their high "We want to be respect- school team, it is their last go around at high school golf." "I feel really good about the number of golfers we have. We have some very good kids to work with from good families. It has been great to work with such good kids and good families for the past 16 or 17 years. They appreciate the coach- ing and I definitely appreci- ate the players and the par- ents. back this season and I ex- pect the younger players to work hard at earning a spot on the varsity team. We give everyone a chance to play varsity and then they earn "We have a good nucleus the right to play varsity at the end of the season. When the younger kids get to play varsity it helps them get ready for the future," said the coach.
