Pick 'Em The Dialogue We want to hear from you. Visit vegasinc.com to post comments to stories. On Steve Green's March 26 VEGAS INC article on the state of the local economy ("Moody's analysts: 'The Las Vegas recovery is under way' "): It's wonderful that they think the big casino owners are getting richer. However, schools are still terrible and we continue to hear about education budget shortfalls. Plus, retail centers are empty all over the valley. — TeamSG1 (Daniel Jackson) If fuel prices continue to climb, the Las Vegas recovery could be short- lived indeed. I know flights in general have gone up significantly and what was once a bargain vacation is now becoming more of an investment. I am finding fewer and fewer deals that encourage me to make the journey to Las Vegas. — Feldling (Eddie Gaul) On Ric Anderson's March 13 vegasinc. com story about plans to remodel Fitzgeralds and rebrand it as D Las Vegas ("Fitzgeralds becomes the latest Vegas casino to undergo a name change"): First there was the M. Now the D. Only 24 letters left to choose from! — Bakersfield (Joe Stormont) I think the rendering looks new and modern. I think it will do great, and I'm always happy to see these older places getting updated. — Noindex (Thomas Delahunty) As long as they don't change too much about the place. Downtown Vegas may soon try to be like the ultra- clubby Strip. Hope not. I like to game a little and enjoy a pool and buffet, and that's about it. — Motowner4Vegas (Kate Sturgill) On Steve Green's March 26 VEGAS INC cover story on the court hearing over the structural defects at the Harmon ("After hearing, it's clearer than ever that Harmon is doomed"): The structural engineer designs where the rebar goes. The concrete contractor is supposed to install it where and how the drawings show it. The inspector checks to see that it has been done correctly. So, if the design was flawed, it should have been caught and corrected during plan check. If the installation was incorrect, it should have been caught in the field before the concrete was poured. So, why do we have this situation? — JudgeRoyBean (Klaus Steinke) Demolishing the Harmon has to happen at this point. The damage to the building's reputation — right or wrong — is a public relations disaster. There's no way tenants or guests would feel safe in such a building after the concerns raised. Also, it's hard to imagine an insurance company being willing to insure a building that some engineers have declared unsafe. — UTE (William Finch) How many city inspectors have lost their jobs or are having their pay garnished for failure to perform their assigned duties? — Bob_Realist On Ron Sylvester's March 20 vegasinc. com story on downtown casino CHRISTOPHER DeVARGAS On Richard N. Velotta's March 13 vegasinc.com story on new management at the Rampart casino ("Michael Gaughan — son of South Point owner, grandson of Jackie Gaughan — to take reins at Rampart"): Another casino rescued from the hotel majors and set for expansion and success. This group does well because they run gambling joints the proper, old- fashioned way — as a gambling hall with entertainment, a hotel and restaurants attached. Good entertainment, good inexpensive food, good inexpensive rooms and good inexpensive booze result in big gambling wins and profits. — Malous (Dennis Hill) renovations ("Downtown casino renovations maintain Old Vegas vibe"): Downtown Las Vegas and Tropicana on the Strip are pretty much the only ones who get it. While I don't like all the name changes downtown, I do like the use of an existing structure while updating it as well. — Motowner4Vegas (Kate Sturgill) Get smart Power tweets Overheard Done Deal Power Lunch The Numbers .com Buy high Sell low VEGASINCmag Vegas then ? ? ? ? ? !
