Brehm was a longtime newspaper publisher. In 1962, Brehm and his wife began buying newspapers, starting with the weekly Los Banos (California) Enterprise and the Auburn (California) Journal in 1965, adding to the 17 weekly and two daily suburban newspapers and a printing division near Los Angeles. After selling the LA area newspapers, he bought and sold many additional newspapers, with the com pany now in seven states with over 50 publications, 40 websites and five printing facilities. Mark Miller, The News-Banner (Bluffton) Jack Pate, Evansville Courier & Press John Rumbach, The Herald (Jasper) T he Evansville Courier & Press and other Journal Media Group newspa- pers will soon have a new owner. Journal Media Group properties will become part of Gannett, a newspaper group whose flagship paper is Virginia-based USA Today. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2016. Journal Media Group, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the corporate parent of the Evansville Courier & Press and the Henderson Gleaner. It owns a total of 15 daily newspapers, and its flagship is the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. When the deal is completed, Gannett will occupy 106 U.S. markets and command a digital audience of more than 100 mil- lion unique visitors each month. Within Indiana, Gannett owns the newspapers in Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie and Richmond. The Louisville Courier-Journal is also a Gannett property. Gannett will pay about $280 million cash for Journal Media Group. The deal is subject to the approval of federal regulators and Journal Media Group shareholders. The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of both Gannett and Journal Media Group. Under the terms, Journal Media Group shareholders will receive cash of $12 per share. Both Gannett and Journal Media Group are newspaper-only companies created through recently completed spinoffs. Journal Media Group formed when two companies that operated print and broad- cast outlets – E.W. Scripps and Journal Communications – formulated a merger/spi- noff deal. Likewise, Gannett's holdings previ- ously included both newspaper and broadcast. T he Texas-based company buying Home News Enterprises newspapers said not much would change about the day-to- day operations of the properties. Home News Enterprises, based in Columbus and owned for six generations by the Brown family, reached an agreement to sell its newspaper, online and commercial printing properties to AIM Media Indiana. An affiliate of AIM Media Texas, the com- pany owns community newspapers in the Lone Star State. Both companies are managed by AIM Media Management of Dallas, where Jeremy L. Halbreich serves as chairman and CEO and Rick Starks is president and CFO. AIM said all HNE employees will be hired and continue in their respective jobs and positions with the new company. Jeffrey N. Brown, HNE president and chief executive officer, will remain with the com- pany and retain his current responsibilities. Jeffrey Brown and his father, Robert N. Brown, turned The Republic (Columbus), a small, central Indiana newspaper, into a cor- porate entity publishing newspapers in sev- eral other Indiana communities, expanding its commercial printing operations, develop- ing magazine and specialty publications and creating a robust online and digital presence. Halbreich has a rich newspaper back- ground. He leads daily and weekly newspa- pers in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and purchased those online and print assets in 2012 from Freedom Communications Inc. Before establishing AIM Media Texas, he was at the helm of major U.S. media compa- nies, including Sun-Times Media in Chicago and American Consolidated Media in Dallas. During his tenure at the Chicago Sun-Times, the newspaper won a Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. – The Republic (Columbus) Home News Enterprises sells to Texas group Evansville Courier & Press, others bought by Gannett
