Skydiving became a hobby for a few years after Steve Pride's return from service with the 101st Airborne. He went up with a jump instructor and photographer at Franklin, Ind., for his first jump in about 43 years this past August 28. The event marked his 70th birthday. He hopes to duplicate this event on his 80th birthday, if health will allow it. Pride makes jump at age 70 By James Capozella Petersburg's Steve Pride celebrated his 70th birth- day recently by traveling to Franklin, Ind., for a tan- dem skydive that brought back memories of 43 years ago when he last jumped as a member of the Vincennes Skydiving Club. Pride, who was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, stepped forward out of a perfectly good air- plane to go back in time to when he was jumping in the military. Skydiving later be- came his hobby. Decades later, the deci- sion to renew his relation- ship with free falling has brought on a new chal- lenge. He intends to "do it again on my 80th birthday" unless a health issue at that time makes it a no go. Oth- erwise, he is ready to bud- dy up for the tandem jump that starts at 10,500 feet and free falls for 35 sec- onds before the altimeter reads 3,500 feet. His tan- dem jump mate then pulls the rip cord, which leads to a rather hard landing on your rear end. As Pride says it, "We both lift our legs at the last second and land on our butts because using your feet can get you tangled up easily." Pride, a member of the elite 101st Airborne dur- ing the Viet Nam War, has made 32 jumps to date, with a 43-year gap between his birthday jump in August and the skydiving club ac- tivity sometime after his ar- my enlistment. Pride said, "I actually just went up to Franklin on August 28 to arrange for the flight in September, but it was such a nice day, it was decided to make the jump right then."
