C-8 Opinion Wednesday, November 4, 2015 The Press-Dispatch Sweet's column Letter to the Editor Not broke, don't fix it To The Editor: When I heard they were going to close Otwell school, I thought of a say- ing I had heard from my youth – if it ain't broke, don't fix it. When it comes to the Otwell school and all schools in Indiana, there is nothing, now or since, wrong with the school system except the ones making the laws. I'm an insu- lator by trade. I haven't got a clue on curriculum for school children or how to make or execute one. A teacher is whom I would go to for that. When are you all going to let those that are trained to teach decide on how to execute the curriculum? Your job should be to look at what they decide to teach, to see if it is good for our children to learn. Now take the ad- vice you have just been given and learn from it. I want the children to have the same opportunity as I had. Right now, they don't! Cards, visits, phone calls and daily thoughts are very helpful. The Patoka River in Win- slow, from the rain we had over the weekend, has ris- en a bit. The yards, or some yards, have leaves instead of grass as a cover. I saw where some leaves are at the com- post site at the Winslow Ball Field but check Town Hall if that's where you bring your bagged leaves. Leaves are good to put around your plants for the long winter. Speaking of winter, some say it's going to be a mild winter but the persimmon seeds say a spoon shoveling will hap- pen. I guess we will find out soon enough. The election was Tuesday but as I write it's Sunday, so the talk of who won will be in next week's column. I hope you all voted! Did you change your clocks back one hour Satur- day night? We changed ours Sunday morning and some clocks change automatically. My mom, Mildred, was taken out to eat on Saturday for her 89th birthday on Hal- loween by her son, George with Deby and her mom, Connie. They were joined by my sister, Teresa and Ted at a restaurant in the area. PRIZE WINNERS The Winslow Lions Club sponsored a Halloween Pa- rade and Contest which was a big hit with quite a few kids. The weather was nice and the kids marched behind the fire truck and Gayhart's tractor and wagon, plus an- other wagon load of kids, to the parking lot by the Eskimos Gro- cery, where the judging was do- ne. Several kids along the route marched with the others as they all made their way to the parking lot. The judges had a fun time as they picked the winners but ev- eryone was a winner even if they weren't the biggest win- ner. The Most Original giv- en by the Bob-Inn was Ste- ven Hayhurst. The Best Su- perhero given by the Win- slow Community Center was Jaelyn Hall. The Ugliest giv- en by the Eskimos Grocery was Cainan Russell. The Prettiest given by the Fish Hut was Khloee Bolin. The Best Character given by the Eagles were three winners, Xander Kendle, Breyanna McAtee and Maddi Brau- necker. Each child also received a bag of candy. The Winslow Lions Club would like to ex- press its appreciation to the Winslow Fire Dept. for its help. Lots and lots of kids were out trick or treating all over Winslow and we heard that several houses ran out of can- dy or they just had a small amount left. Kyana couldn't go trick or treating with us this year, so Norm and I gave out some treats to lots of houses in Winslow for Sweet's Col- umn Halloween Yard Dec- oration and we heard from some stars "We have no can- dy." We said, "That's okay be- cause we are here to give you a treat for decorating your yard for the kids." This year, I believe we handed out more treats than the year before. Some houses were deco- rated for the first time and they said next year they will do it again. If you didn't see the yards in Winslow this year, they were all just grand and one house had carved pumpkins of all designs, an- other house was still deco- rating with more pretties for the kids like blue stars that shown across the street, some had graveyards with smoke, but all over town it had the Halloween spirit. Norm loves to get made up on Halloween so he went as a Zombie Biker with his leath- er coat and chaps, his face was painted up with blood and the other ghostly col- ors. Vernon came in with a hat that I wore that night with a star of blue and a crescent moon of blue on each cheek. The hat had many colors and looked like a jester hat but I also said I had a bad hair day. Everyone liked it and I got a laugh from everyone that night. Mom and I drove to Pe- tersburg to celebrate with the Republican Party for Hal- loween where we saw Buzz Lightyear, Mrs. Potato Head and Piggy Bank. We also saw witches, scarecrows, ninjas, several politicians, lots of soup like chili, sandwiches and sweet treats of all kinds. Games for the kids and glow sticks plus they all had loads of fun. Later that night, we stopped by the Bob-Inn to hear some good music by the Uprising Band and saw some stars we haven't seen for a few years like Denise Hartley who lives in Jasper now. She came to keep a tra- dition her Dad, Denzil always did by coming to the Bob-Inn on Halloween. Kathy and Ira were there, Brenda, the Moore's and some I know but I don't know their names. The place had standing room only but it was worth it to see all our stars again. We are sorry to hear of the passing of Bob Lemond, of Winslow, on Sunday morn- ing, and to the boys, Cory and Robert, are thoughts are with you always, remember all the great times with dad. Two more signatures are on the cabin doors by Ken- neth Hall and John Heuring. John Heuring stopped by to tell us the place to hand in Sweet's Column had been changed to the Pantry, so no Sunday walks to the library. This will help Boots also to type up the column a day ear- lier. I can't think of any more ramblings so the lights will start to dim for this week. Keep an eye on family and friends, slow down, watch out for deer and stopped school buses, and like I always say, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week.
