She and her colleagues protect the rep- utations of Olivia Pope & Associ- ates' prominent clients — while also hiding their own dirty little se- crets — in "Scandal," which airs Thursday, Oct. 22, on ABC. Ironically, as the founder of a cri- sis-management firm, Pope is at the center of a scandal herself. She's had an on-again, off-again dalliance with the president of the United States since the series be- gan. The action does not slow down this season, and both the team's clients and the team members themselves have plenty of drama to deal with. Joining said team on a more permanent basis are Portia de Rossi ("Arrested Develop- ment"), who had a recurring role last season as the nefarious Eliza- beth North, and Cornelius Smith Jr. ("All My Children") as Marcus Walker. These two newcomers should add some spice to the al- ready sizzling cast. Created by modern television hit-maker Shonda Rhimes, the po- litical thriller is now in its fifth sea- son and is showing no signs of slowing down. It airs as part of ABC's TGIT ("Thank God It's Thurs- day") programming block, flanked by "Grey's Anatomy" and "How to Get Away With Murder," which were also created by Rhimes. She based the Olivia Pope character on a former George H. W. Bush-ad- ministration press aide, Judy Smith, who served as co-executive pro- ducer of the show from 2012 to 2014. Like Pope, Smith founded a crisis-management firm after working in the White House. She was working for NBC in 2009 when a meeting with Rhimes led to the development of "Scandal." By that time, Rhimes already had two huge hits for ABC — "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" — and it didn't take long for "Scandal" to take off as well. Ratings have risen steadily throughout the seasons, and the show has moved up the ranks of television prime time to become one of the most hotly anticipated shows on TV. For those wondering what all of the fuss is about, Wash- ington insists you can jump right in. "Every single week is a good jumping-in time — it's never too late to join the 'Scandal' roller- coaster," she explained in an ABC press clip. Feature this week
