In this era of Netflix binge-watching, on-demand pro- gramming and cable juggernauts, attracting that many live viewers to prime time is an impressive feat. It's one that "Scandal" achieves easily, thanks to a combination of award-winning acting and plot lines that are, well, scandalous. At the end of last season, the show took a bold step by (spoiler alert!) bringing Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn, "Ghost," 1990) together, finally ending that will-they-or-won't- they tension that keeps so many series going. In fact, Washington explained to E! News that she wor- ried the move may have meant the end of the series altogether. "You know, in a lot of shows when the central love relationship finally comes together, that's the end of the show," said Washing- ton. "But I think it's more like in life, that when our relationship begins, that's the beginning, not the end." If someone can keep things fresh, it's Rhimes. After all, "Grey's Anatomy" didn't fall apart after Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Mc- Dreamy (Patrick Dempsey) got to- gether. The writer, producer and found- er of ShondaLand is behind some of today's biggest TV series, and she has a lot of pull. The alphabet network in particular has fawned over her — she explained in a 2013 New York Times article that she stopped taking notes from the network during the first season of "Scandal." It would appear she doesn't need them. Of all of her shows, Rhimes has taken owner- ship of "Scandal" in particular, call- ing it the show she wants to watch. With such a cast, it's no wonder. Before heading to television, Washington starred in a number of films, including "She Hate Me" (2004) and "The Last King of Scot- land" (2006). She also received critical acclaim for her role in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Un- chained" (2012) the same year "Scandal" premiered. Despite her other successes, her portrayal of Pope seems to be her crowning achievement. At this year's Television Critics Association press tour, Washington expressed her love for the part, saying: "In Shondaland, the characters are complicated. There are no good guys or bad guys … there are three-dimensional human beings." Kerry Washington stars in "Scandal"
