Post Staff MILWAUKEE — Local officials are join- ing in support of state Attorney General Brad Schimel's launch of Dose of Reality. The campaign, launched last week, pub- licizes the dangers of prescription opioid painkiller misuse and discourages children and young people from trying opioid med- ications. It will feature television and radio spots, social media activity and advertis- ing. "The epidemic of prescription painkiller abuse is taking an enormous toll on our children, our families and our com- munity," Schimel said in a video on the cam- paign's website. "None of us as parents would leave a loaded handgun on the kitchen counter, and yet very few of us think twice about leav- ing prescription painkillers sitting in our medicine cabinets unsecured, and those prescription painkillers are killing a lot more people than handguns." The campaign launch comes a month ahead of the Department of Justice's Drug Take Back Day on Oct. 17. Officials from the Medical Society of Milwaukee County, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, Mayor Tom Barrett and Common Council President Michael J. Murphy praised the initiative. "It is clear that the scourge of heroin and opioid addiction is not going to go away soon, and the depth of the problem is felt across all city neighborhoods, all suburban neighborhoods, and in rural areas," Murphy said in a statement last week. While medical experts and law enforce- ment officials have drawn a connection between painkiller abuse and heroin use, Department of Health Services Secretary Kitty Rhoades said 45 percent of the state's 843 drug overdose deaths in 2013 were caused by opioid painkillers Schimel's office stressed the campaign is "not designed to vilify prescription painkillers nor those who prescribe them, but to raise awareness that when used or stored improperly, they can be dangerous or even deadly. Prescription painkillers can be beneficial when properly prescribed by a licensed medical or dental professional, properly used as directed, stored securely and disposed of properly." More than 150 deaths have been attrib- uted to drug overdose in Milwaukee County in the first half of 2015, and the problem is only expected to get worse, said Dr. Brian Peterson, chief medical examiner for Milwaukee County and president-elect of the Medical Society of Milwaukee County. "Overdoses will account for some 20 per- cent of our autopsies this year, compared to 10 percent motor vehicle accidents, less than 3 percent for infant deaths and around 15 percent for homicides," Peterson said. Barrett called Dose of Reality an "aggressive and valuable public informa- tion campaign." Murphy said Milwaukee is working on the problem. "We need to make sure we keep prescrip- tion painkillers away from those who might abuse them, and in Milwaukee, there are now secure drop boxes at each Milwaukee Police Department district station where people can dispose of opioid medications safely and anonymously," Murphy said.
