By ARTHUR THOMAS Conley News Service MILWAUKEE — Gov. Scott Walker on Monday suspended his presidential campaign, effectively dropping out of the race just 70 days after he announced his bid at the Waukesha County Expo Center. Walker said he was in church Sunday when "the pastor's words reminded me that the Bible is full of stories about people who were called to be leaders in unusual ways. "I believe that I am being called to lead by helping to clear the field so that a positive con- servative message can rise to the top of the field. With that in mind, I will suspend my campaign immediately," Walker said during a news conference in Madison. The governor delivered his statement from a plain lectern with U.S. and Wisconsin flags positioned behind him. The image was a stark contrast from the packed and raucous atmosphere of the Expo Center announcement. Walker encouraged other Republican candi- dates to also clear the field "so the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive conserva- tive alternative to the current front-runner." That front-runner, Donald Trump, has been seen by many as a major factor in Walker's fall in the polls. Walker was the first candidate to break clear of the field in polls earlier this year, but his steady fall has coincided with Trump's rise. Walker led the RealClearPolitics average of national polls on April 1 with 17.3 percent. His numbers trailed off slightly but rose again after his campaign launch. A Fox News poll done in the days after the July 13 launch put him at 15 percent nationally, behind only Trump. Walker's national average topped out at 13.7 percent on July 31 before falling to just 1.8 percent in the latest RealClearPolitics average. Trump, meanwhile, is now at 28.5 percent. As news broke about Walker's exit from the race, Trump tweeted "I got to know @ScottWalker well — he's a very nice person and has a great future." Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow said he is glad Walker got into the race in the first place and felt that the governor's voice in the race set a positive tone early on. "I think part of what happened was his good Midwestern values didn't allow him to be Governor feels called to 'clear the field' Walker calls for other Republicans to exit presidential race Walker MARK BELLING Young political guns set sights higher Page 8 GOP leaders youthful compared to aging Democrats STEVE 'THE HOMER' TRUE You didn't have to play the game to run it Page 11 Brewers pick Ivy Leaguer as general manager MILWAUKEE COUNTY'S WEEKLY NEWSPAPER SEPTEMBER 25, 2015 DID YOU KNOW?
