"We have never had a win like this," Abele said at a celebratory news conference Wednesday that laid out some of the details of the land transfer. "We're creating jobs — thousands of jobs." At Wednesday's signing, Bucks President Peter Feigin said the land transfer will cre- ate more than just a sports stadium. "The Park East land will be an area where people live, work and play," Feigin said. "This is a very special moment for the Bucks. We're pumped to get this project started." Abele's sale of Park East for such a paltry dollar figure has not been without contro- versy. Opponents have criticized Abele for essentially giving away a valuable piece of land to the Bucks owners, who live outside Wisconsin and are billionaires. In advance of Abele's official announce- ment, several members of the County Board on Wednesday began issuing news releases in opposition to the plan. "Today, we all celebrate that the Bucks are staying in Milwaukee," County Board Chairman Theo Lipscomb Sr. said in a state- ment. "But tomorrow, and for the next 20 years, taxpayers must pay the tab Chris Abele ran up. The Bucks recently paid above market value in private transactions, but when it comes to land owned by taxpayers, (he) chose not to hold them to the same stan- dard." County Board Supervisor Steve Taylor said he was pleased the Bucks are staying in town, but criticized Abele for his handling of the land sale. "The county executive and his adminis- tration managed to freeze the board out of a vote on this proposal, which means a thor- ough public discussion did not take place, except through a public hearing held by the board," Taylor said in a statement. "There are certainly questions about transparency surrounding this sale on the county execu- tive's part." But there are plenty of supporters behind the land transfer as well. At Wednesday's signing, Dan Bukiewicz, president of the Milwaukee Building and Construction Trades Council, lauded Abele, Feigin and others at the helm of the Park East land deal. "I can't express the joy I feel today … that a vast wasteland is being turned into some- thing we all can be proud of," Bukiewicz said. "In Milwaukee, we like to debate things. But there are winds of change in this community when it comes to development." 10 • Milwaukee County Post • September 11, 2015 MILWAUKEE — An event coinciding with the 9/11 attacks will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center, 750 N.
