Page 2 September 10, 2015 Army veteran operated several newspapers L ongtime Indiana news- paper owner Eugene "Marty" Norbert Marten died on July 26, 2015, at his home in Cottonwood, Arizona. He was born on April 24, 1928, in Tomah, Wisconsin, to Norbert and Emma (Rosenow) Marten. Following graduation from Tomah High School he joined the Army. He served with the occupation forces in Japan in 1947-48 and became edi- tor of the Pacific Stars and Stripes, serving directly under Gen. Douglas A. McArthur. This paper served all the U.S. forces in Japan and the entire Pacific theater. He also served during the Korean War. Marten attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University and did masters work at the University of Oregon in Eugene. He married Joyce Lawrence on November 25, 1948. In the fall of 1953, the cou- ple purchased the Montpelier Herald in Montpelier, Indiana, building the newspa- per up and selling it in 1957. A leading story while there was Marten's interview of Elvis Presley. The couple then purchased a larger newspaper property in LaGrange, Indiana. The LaGrange Publishing Co. pub- lishes the LaGrange Standard and LaGrange News and serves the entire county. Keeping their interest in the newspapers when they moved on to Arizona in 1969, they purchased the Verde Independent. At that time it was a small, tab-size publication serving the Upper Verde Valley. It grew with the Valley until it was a full-size, twice a week publication, including special sections for Camp Verde and Sedona. Often it ran to 60 pages. Marten believed a com- munity newspaper should be solely devoted to the lives, activities, concerns and inter- ests of people in the commu- nity. In July 1979 they sold the Independent to Western Newspapers. Following the sale of the newspaper, the couple traveled extensively to over 75 coun- tries on six continents includ- ing many third-world coun- tries. They traveled coast to coast and border to border, as well as into Alaska and Mexico in their motor home. Marten had been active in a wide variety of service and professional organizations, including president of Arizona Newspaper Association, Grand Canyon Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (Sigma Delta Chi), Cottonwood Progressive Association, Clarkdale-Verde District Kiwanis Club and the Verde Valley Ambulance Co. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years Joyce; children Michael (Debbie) Marten of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Dennis (Beth Ann) Marten of Chandler, Arizona, Elizabeth (Dave) Handley of Mammoth Lakes, California, and Patricia (Michael) Chesney of Medford, Oregon. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one sister. It's as easy as 1, 2, and 3. 1. The deadline for filing your Periodicals Class Statement of Ownership, Form 3526, with the Post Office is Oct. 1. You may obtain the necessary form from your local post office or from the U.S. Postal Service's Web site, www.usps. com. Click on forms, click on periodical forms, and then scroll down to Form PS3526. 2. The deadline for publishing your notice depends on your frequency of publication: For dailies and newspapers published two or more times a week, the deadline is Oct. 10. For weeklies, the deadline is Oct. 31. 3. While you have these forms at hand, please fax or email a copy to HSPA for use in verifying your circulation for HSPA membership eligibility, contest eligibility and HSPA directory information. The fax number is (317) 624- 4428 and email can be sent to yyeadon@hspa.com. Remember: The publication requirement applies to all paid-circulation newspapers, regardless of whether you use independent carrier or postal delivery. This is a requirement to maintain your Periodicals mail permit from the U.S. Postal Service. Maintaining your periodicals permit is necessary to continue your eligibility to carry public notice advertising under Indiana law. Another reminder: You now may count online circulation. There's a page on the postal form where online circulation can be included, but don't count online subscribers twice if they also subscribe to the print edition.
