10 • Milwaukee County Post • September 4, 2015 Special election leads to Common Council changes MILWAUKEE — Prompted primarily by the special election of Alder man Mark Borkowski, Common Council President Michael J. Murphy on Monday announced changes to council committees. Borkowski, who won the Aug. 18 spe- cial election to com- plete the unexpired ter m of the late Alderman Joe Dudzik, was appointed by Murphy to the Community and Economic Development Committee in replacement of Alderman José G. Pérez, and to the Judiciary and Legislation Committee in replacement of Alderman Jim Bohl. Murphy appointed Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs to the Public Safety Committee to fill Dudzik's vacancy. She was also named vice chairwoman of the Finance and Personnel Committee, a position previously held by Dudzik. Murphy also made regular Pérez's appointment to the Finance and Personnel Committee. He had previously been filling the vacancy left by Dudzik on a temporary basis. Borkowski The majority of the resi- dents speaking at this week's hearing offered sen- timents similar to Feigen's, and many of the naysayers expressed enthusiasm for a new arena. But the rub has been the funding plan, which also includes $55 million in state funding and a $1 sale of the county- owned Park East corridor. Jennifer O'Hear, one of the leaders of the grass- roots group Common Ground, criticized the city's funding plan. "We have not been opposed to the Bucks or the construction of a new arena," O'Hear said, speaking on behalf of Common Ground. "Our concern is the way public money is being used." Pointing to the Bucks' deep-pocketed out-of-state ownership group, which will pony up $150 million of its own money, O'Hear said, "They do not need our public money. Our chil- dren and other residents need that public money." But a cross section of other groups are imploring the city to be a player in the arena talks. Ralph Holman, president of the Milwaukee Urban League, quickly acknowl- edged the city grapples with poverty, crime and other worrying situations. "There is not one single thing that will solve all our challenges," Holman said. "However, (the Urban League) believes building a new arena … will give our community a strong economic boost." Monday's hearing was the first of three. Two other panels — the Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee and the Finance and Personnel Committee — will hold their own hear- ings before the council deliberates and possibly votes on the plan Sept. 22.
