September 4, 2015 • Milwaukee County Post • 15 By TOM JOZWIK Post Film Critic Like previous Milwaukee Film Festivals, the seventh annual MFF will offer a num- ber of themed programs. The 2015 agenda includes "Film Feast," "Rated K: For Kids," "Art + Artists," "Cinema Hooligante," "The Black Lens," and "Sound Vision." "Film Feast" It seems a particularly palatable pro- gram choice for the state of Wisconsin, where residents enjoy few things more than the three F's of football, festivals and food. Food's been a popular big-screen sub- ject of late, with the well-received "Chef" and "The Hundred-Foot Journey" in 2014 and the comedy "Adam Jones" starring Bradley Cooper as the title role restaura- teur scheduled for release this fall. During its Sept. 24-Oct. 8 run, the MFF will reportedly screen seven documen- taries and one fictional film "that explore and celebrate the culture of food and drink." "Old Fashioned: The Story of the Wisconsin Supper Club" and "Tale of the Spotted Cow" are two of the documen- taries; the latter considers the New Glarus Brewery's founders, who also created the craft beer of the movie's title. The Swedish-Norwegian "Love and Lemons," the "Feast" program's fictional entry, is billed as a "romantic comedy that proves a recipe for disaster can turn out to be some- thing quite sweet." "Rated K" A highlight of the "Rated K: For Kids" program will be an anniversary screening of "Babe." The first 200 patrons who show up wearing "their finest farm attire" will get free popcorn. As a corollary to the Australian-American flick — a 1995 Golden Globe winner — a "Rated K: For Kids Barnyard Bash," complete with a pet- ting zoo, is slated for Sept. 26. Details can be found at www.mkefilm.org. While targeting the 3- to 12-year-old set, the "Rated K" program will be, according to MFF publicists, "equally enjoyable for all ages." Having seen several excellent children's films at past festivals, I'd be inclined to resoundingly affirm that quote. I'm looking forward to "A Little Game," earmarked for ages 9 and above, about a new-at-her-school tween who receives chess, and life, lessons from a curmudgeon played by Academy Award laureate F. Murray Abraham. The cast also boasts Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis and Emmy winner Janeane Garofalo. Also in the well-populated "Rated K" camp is the animated "Song of the Sea," sequel to 2009's "Secret of Kells," for ages 6 and older. "Art + Artists" According to Kristopher Pollard, the "Art + Artists" programmer, aficionados will "have a lot to choose from at the festi- val … from visual art, opera and experi- mental film to cartoons and stand-up com- edy." The Argentine documentary "Nicola Costantino: The Artefacta," about an icon- oclastic South American artist, will make its U.S. debut at the MFF — with Costantino and the doc's director Natalie Cristiani slated to attend. "Mediated Realities: Videos by Jesse McLean," an avant garde moviemaker, rep- resents a new wrinkle at the MFF as "a sin- gle artist showcase of work." Another of the program's eight films is "Iris" by Albert Maysles ("Gimme Shelter"), who died at 88 in March. The celebrated docu- mentarian's final film profiles fashion maven Iris Apfel. "Cinema Hooligante" The program, through which the MFF nods in the direction of the horror genre, promises a bill of "gory, trippy, raunchy, scary, sometimes offensive, always fun films from the best corners of cinema sub- culture." Showings of Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" and Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" in conjunction with their respective 40th and 35th anniversaries highlight the "Hooligante" category. "White God," from Hungary ("Imagine 'The Birds' told from the animal's perspective and you're only scratching the surface," goes the promo- tional line), and the multicountry effort Milwaukee Film Festival to take center stage ENTERTAINMENT MFF Oscar laureate F. Murray Abraham imparts lessons in chess and life to Fatima Ptacek in "A Little Game," appropriate for MFF attendees 9 and older.
