BUSINESS September 4, 2015 • Milwaukee County Post •7 By KATHERINE MICHALETS Conley News Service WAUWATOSA — With the abundance of "accepted offer" and "sold" plaques topping local real estate signs, it's no wonder that more people are entering the real estate industry. In July, Shorewest Realtors hired 32 agents, including five at its Northshore office at 4559 N. Oakland Ave., Shorewood, four at its Southridge office at 5111 S. 76th St., Greendale, three at its Elmbrook/ Wauwatosa office at 11622 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa, and one each at its South Suburban office at 8880 S. Howell Ave., Oak Creek, and its downtown Milwaukee office at 1610 N. Water St., Milwaukee. Casey Clickner, vice president, director of growth and development for Shorewest, said interest in becoming a real estate agent has definitely picked up along with the mar- ket since 2012. Annually there has been a 21 percent increase in new agents at Shorewest since 2012, he said. The hires come from Shorewest's school, as well as agents who already have their licenses. Bob Larson, manager of the First Weber Waukesha office, said he has observed a similar trend. He said he anticipates the trend to continue as long as interest rates stay low. "The membership numbers do generally follow the ebb and flow of the marketplace," said Mike Theo, president and CEO of the Wisconsin Realtors Association. There are between 12,000 and 14,000 Realtors in Wisconsin, compared with the total of about 11,000 during the Great Recession. Theo said the number was at an all-time high during the housing bubble, when there were about 19,000 Realtors in Wisconsin. The average number historical- ly, Theo said, is around the 13,000 mark. There are just under 20,000 people hold- ing a real estate license in Wisconsin, Theo said. To obtain such a license, a person must take 72 hours of pre-license education and then pass an exam offered by the state of Wisconsin. Theo said he is observing more young and career-oriented people entering real estate. During the recession many of the older agents who were closer to retirement left the field, which Theo said may have been related to technology changes. On average, the age of the WRA's members has stayed in the low- to mid-50s. "We are glad to see more and more people choosing real estate as a preferred field," Clickner said. Clickner said there really isn't a limit to the number of agents the market can sup- port. "We are not close to meeting that satura- tion point," he said. "The market takes care of that." www.shorewest.com Shorewest: 21% annual increase in new agents since 2012 MILWAUKEE — The latest report on the state of manufacturing in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois revealed that the industry has improved slightly compared with June and July, but remains constricted. Tuesday's Marquette-Institute of Supply Management Report on Manufacturing showed that manufacturing was at a sea- sonally adjusted level of 47.67 in August. Any number under 50 indicates a constrict- ing market. However, the level was 47.12 in July and 46.55 in June. Respondents to the survey said that busy weeks were often followed by slow weeks and that there is a continued pessimism about the long-term outlook. Suppliers' delivery times remain poor, they said. According to the survey, areas of manu- facturing that are improving are invento- ries and backlog of orders while new orders, production, employment, prices, exports and imports are all declining. The survey's respondents also said orders have slowed from a few months ago in response to lack of demand, there have been critical machine breakdowns and near-term orders are volatile. However, the positive expectations for upcoming market conditions have improved when compared with July. About 38.5 percent of respondents said they expect positive conditions while 53.8 percent expect conditions to remain the same while 7.7 percent said they anticipate conditions worsening. In July, 28.6 percent of respon- dents said they felt positive conditions were on the horizon, while 57.1 percent said they expected conditions to remain the same and 14.3 percent expected conditions to worsen. — Katherine Michalets, Conley News Service Manufacturing improves slightly in August We will MEET or BEAT any advertised price!
