Duke Energy rates decreasing due to lower coal costs Duke Energy custom- ers in Indiana are getting a break on their summer electric bills, and they can expect additional savings through the end of the year due to lower fuel costs. Rates for the average res- idential customer have de- clined about 8 percent com- pared to last July, in large part due to lower coal costs. That amounts to about $10 in savings on a monthly bill for a customer using 1,000 kilo- watt-hours. Costs in 2015 are also low- er because extreme winter weather in 2014 drove up fuel and purchased power costs. Rates for more energy-in- tensive customers, business- es that use large amounts of power, have declined about 9 to 10 percent compared to last summer. Costs will reduce further over the next few months as lower-cost fuel replaces higher-cost supplies. Those additional savings, if ap- proved by the Indiana Util- ity Regulatory Commission in a filing made today, would amount to $2 monthly for an average residential custom- er during October, Novem- ber and December. Some of the savings are also due to a true-up of previous cost pro- jections. "A large part of the de- creases is due to a settle- ment with one of our large coal suppliers, which means reduced fuel costs to pro- duce electricity—savings that we pass along to cus- tomers," said Duke Ener- gy Indiana President Mel- ody Birmingham-Byrd. "These are significant rate decreases that will help our customers, especially indus- tries and large businesses, reduce and control their costs, particularly during the summer when custom- ers use more power and bills are higher." Indiana state utility reg- ulators review utility fuel costs four times a year, and costs fluctuate, but a signifi- cant part of these decreases are due to lower pricing for a long-term coal contract. Fu- el costs are one of the larg- est components of a custom- er's bill. Citizens can report damage from recent severe weather online Indiana homeowners, renters, businesses and pri- vate non-profit organiza- tions that sustained unin- sured damage caused by recent severe storms and flooding can report damage online at myoracle.in.gov/ hs/damage/ia-public.do?m ethod=active&incidentId= IA20150708112230. A link to the form is also available on the Indiana De- partment of Homeland Se- curity (IDHS) website at www.in.gov/dhs. In the mid- dle of the page under "Fea- tured Topics," click on "Re- port Damage from Severe Weather, Flooding – June 7 and continuing." Uninsured damage from other storms and flooding starting on or after June 7 can also be reported. Damage reports will be used to help local emergen- cy management agencies and the Indiana Depart- ment of Homeland Security with preliminary damage as- sessments and to determine if federal assistance can be pursued.. This is NOT an applica- tion for a grant with the Federal Emergency Man- agement Agency (FEMA). Individuals will be asked to provide their name, ad- dress, phone number and type of damage the proper- ty sustained. Losses can in- clude structural damage to homes and loss of personal property. For questions, contact your county emergency management agency. Con- tact information is available at www.in.gov/dhs/2797. htm. Individuals without Inter- net access are encouraged to contact a friend, family member or neighbor for as- sistance. Web access is also available at many libraries, religious institutions, com- munity centers or other pub- lic facilities. If none of those options is available, individ- uals may also contact their county emergency manage- ment agency to report dam- age.
