2 • LAKE COUNTRY POST • JULY 25, 2015 GMTODAY.COM HEALTH By Katherine Michalets Enterprise Staff CITY OF PEWAUKEE — A break in storms allowed between 4,000 and 5,000 people to attend a three-hour community open house Saturday at the state-of-the- art UW Cancer Center at ProHealth Care, which will be open to patients starting Aug. 10. Built on 13-and-a-half acres off Pewaukee Road near Interstate 94, the cancer center is a partner- ship between ProHealth Care, UW-Health and Aurora Health Care. To represent the partnership, a larger- than-normal bow made of three colors associated with the heath care organi- zations adorned the ceremo- nial ribbon Saturday. ProHealth Care CEO Susan Edwards welcomed special guests Saturday morning before the commu- nity open house. She said the Cancer Cen- ter is "truly taking health care in our community to a whole new level." Inside the facility, patients with cancer will find the latest technology, such as a linear accelerator used for external beam radiation treatments. The linear accelerator is used to treat all parts of the body and delivers high energy X-rays to the region of the patient's tumor. Another exceptional piece of technology is wide bore magnetic resonance imag- ing (an MRI machine) that has greatly reduced the level of noise for the patient and is more open. Mood lighting is also available as part of the machine. Edwards described the facility and its equipment and staff, "nothing short of world class." Dr. Federico Sanchez with Aurora Health Care said in the past few decades health care has increasingly become about companies creating their own "king- doms" and they have moved away from collaborative efforts; however, that has changed with the UW Cancer Center at ProHealth Care. "We will really showcase activities and care for can- cer patients in the area," he said Saturday. Sanchez' hope is to make cancer viewed as manage- able in the future. "No one has cancer alone. No one lives alone," he said. Other features at the new cancer center include 3D mammograms and immediate results if scheduled before 4 p.m. that day. Also on site will be laboratory and pharma- ceutical services. The center is equipped with cyberKnife robotic radiosurgery system (one of only three in the state) as well, offering pre- cise treatment of tumors. For patients receiving chemotherapy, spaces have been created where they can feel comfortable, see the pond and landscaped grounds and even have a window open for fresh air. Throughout the building, the needs of patients and their families were taken into consideration with com- fortable waiting areas, murals by a local artist on children's exam room walls and an outdoor patio area.
