After participating in numerous athletic events, Schaning started thinking he could start a business like them. At 8 a.m. on July 11 in Oconomowoc, Schaning's dream is coming to fruition with the first ever Crafty Cow Ride, a non-competitive bike ride beginning at the restau- rant, 153 E. Wisconsin Ave. and going through the city. "I knew I wanted to bring an event to the Oconomowoc area," Schaning said. "Being an OHS (alumnus) I always had Oconomowoc in my heart and I just wanted to bring a fun event here." The ride will feature 20- mile and 40-mile options. The 20-mile ride will have one rest stop while the 40- mile will have two along the way. At the finish line will be a beer and a burg- er provided by Crafty Cow. Schaning chose the restaurant after a family member told him about it. "I checked it out and absolutely loved my burger and their beer selection," Schaning said. "I emailed the owner and he was excited to help bring this event to Oconomowoc." Owner of the Crafty Cow Devin Eichler mir- rored Schaning's enthusi- asm. "We like doing cool events here as often as we can," Eichler said. "Hon- estly, I thought it was a great opportunity to cre- ate something for down- town Oconomowoc and this community. A part- nership with him is awe- some because it's some- thing we can do every year." Eichler said riders can expect a selection of the Crafty Cow menu and beers on tap from Tyrane- na Brewing Company of Lake Mills. He is already planning for the second Crafty Cow Ride next year. "I can't wait to see what happens with it year after year," Eichler said. "We already have a lot more people than I expected to sign up, which is awe- some." Schaning isn't stopping either. When the last bike crosses the finish line on July 11, his career is just beginning. "My goal is to grow the business by adding quali- ty endurance events that support local communi- ties and give participants a great experience," Schaning said. — Enterprise Staff By Eric Oliver Enterprise Staff OCONOMOWOC — "We want everybody to be black belts in life." Chief instructor Laura Barczak said that's the ulti- mate goal of the newly opened Family Tae Kwon Do, 125 N. Fowler St. Offering classes for adults, children and families FTKD is trying to expand the realm of fitness to include every- body. "We have kids classes and we work with kids 4 and up," Barczak said. "We have just the kids classes and then we have family classes where the whole family can come together, which is really cool because their aren't a lot of activities you can do as a family together." Barczak leads every class. She started tae kwon do when she was younger and advanced to the rank of black belt. She recently returned to the martial art and trained under Master Nick Elliot at the Delafield school. After a few months, she was presented with the opportunity to run her own center. "I decided to leave my career as a personal trainer and a manager at another fitness center and decided to do this," Barczak said. "Doing taekwondo for your job is kind of cool." In her time as the chief instructor, Barczak said the most rewarding part of her job is watching how tae kwon do can transform somebody. She said some kids come into the center quiet and incredibly shy, but once they start counting their punches they are yelling and taking over the room. "That's really the most rewarding part of the job," Barczak said. Barczak said FTKD differs from other exercise options because it teaches self- defense. The center is also playing a big part in the community. Barczak said whenever there is an opportunity to reach out into the communi- ty, she takes it. Overall, Barczak urged anyone interested in martial arts to come to a class and try it. Not only will it be a good workout, it also teaches necessary life skills. "We want everyone to do the best they can in every- thing, not only in taekwon o, but also in life," Barczak said. Mohammed earned a gold medal in the individual archery event. Mohammed is blind in his right eye and suffers from 20 percent vision loss in his left. He was the only veteran compet- ing in the event with a vision impairment. Going into the event he felt very confident about his chances of succeeding. Mohammed also brought home three bronze medals in team archery, the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. "It was nerve-racking at first," Mohammed said. "I had never competed at a high level like that before. After the first two competitions I was able to settle down a bit and get used to it. It turned out to be very fun." As for his future with the Warrior Games, Mohammed said he would continue to com- pete for as long as they keep asking him. — Enterprise Staff HE'S GOLDEN Fighting to help families stay together At a glance What: Crafty Cow Ride When: 8 a.m. July 11 Where: Crafty Cow, 163 E.
