MetroGo!, a local organization focused on regional transporta- tion options, hosted a forum, "How Milwaukee Measures Up," at the University Club of Milwaukee. More than 100 busi- ness and civic leaders from Milwaukee and Waukesha coun- ties attended the event. With Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's polarizing streetcar plan garnering widespread attention this past year, the event provided a timely glimpse into the perceived link between expanding trans- portation and enhancing business opportunities. Barrett, who sat in the audi- ence and spoke briefly at Tuesday's forum, continued to tout the streetcar plan, which is on track to run in a 2.1-mile loop in and near downtown Milwaukee in its first phase of implementa- tion in 2018. "It is not the answer to all our of dreams, and it is not the answer to all of our transportation ques- tions," Barrett said of the street- car. "But part of what I've hoped to do with this is kill the boogey- man. This is not the end of Western civilization." Four years ago, the proposed KRM commuter rail line that would have connected passengers in Kenosha, Racine and Milwaukee was extinguished. So, too, was the possible high-speed Amtrak line that would have offered fast-paced service from Milwaukee to Minneapolis. Barrett said he supported the KRM and Milwaukee-Minneapolis efforts, which required wide- spread buy-in beyond Milwaukee itself.
