Even if such an activity does not rise to such a lofty level for you, Starry Nights at Brookfield's Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts is still worth checking out. "The vibe is really low-key and friendly, and respectful," said Jonathan Winkle, the Wilson Center's executive director. "It's really lovely." The Wilson Center is locat- ed at 19805 W. Capitol Drive in Brookfield's Mitchell Park. Starry Nights is the Wilson Center's free sum- mer concert series. Starry Nights begins June 26. The series breaks for Fourth of July weekend and starts again July 10, and con- tinues each Friday through Aug. 7. Each concert begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Gerlach/Haack Outdoor Theatre. "We're in a city of Brook- field public park, so we have a very positive relationship with the city of Brookfield," Winkle said. "We're a service organization of sorts. We're providing art and cultural experiences for the immedi- ate community — the Brook- field, Elm Grove, Pewaukee area — but then, definitely, we're serving metro Milwau- kee and southeast Wiscon- sin." A free admission series at an arts endeavor, where every penny matters and is measured and counted and scrutinized any number of ways, is seen as a way to engage potential new patrons. "We certainly hope people will perhaps start their expe- rience with the Wilson Cen- ter at a low-cost opportunity, and take a look at what we're presenting through the case of the indoor season," Win- kle said. Winkle said an evening at the Wilson Center during the Starry Nights series does not need to cost any more than dinner at home. "Having a free admission series, in a way, is something that kind of turns the expe- rience," Winkle said, "I think arts organizations are perceived, rightly or wrong- ly, as being experiences only for the wealthy or well-edu- cated. Having a free admis- sion series takes away that barrier." The Wilson Center allows carry-ins of food and bever- age in an open seating lay- out. Food and drink is avail- able from vendors on-site. Parking is free. Winkle said mush of the cost of Starry Nights is off- set by corporate sponsors, including Veolia Environ- mental Services, Steinhafel's Furniture, and Fields Auto Group. Winkle said the Wilson Center goes to great lengths to appeal to diverse musical tastes. "Some of it is having a suitable range of different genres represented," Winkle said. "There's a lot of vari- ety, and I think that's some- thing the center is known for. We have fairly eclectic programming." Sam Llanas, formerly of the BoDeans, opens the series on June 26. Llanas released a solo album enti- tled "The Whole Night Thru" late last year. The BriTins, a Milwaukee- based Beatles tribute band, are playing Starry Nights on July 10. It is also Classic Car Night at the Wilson Center. Acoustic bluegrass trio Above the Town plays on July 17. Five-time Wisconsin state fiddling champion Jerry Loughney, guitarist Bill Brenckle and Jon Peik, a founding member of Madi- son's Nob Hill Boys, com- prise the trio. All-female quartet Valley of the Dolls visits July 24, and will feature a mix of jazz, pop and funk. Paul Cebar and Tomorrow Sound will play Starry Nights on July 31. The ensemble is inspired by western Louisiana and New Orleans-based dance bands. Starry Nights 2015 con- cludes Aug. 7 with a perfor- mance by the Wilson Center Big Band with award-win- ning vocalist Jenny Thiel. Winkle plays trombone in the ensemble. "In a way, the metro Mil- waukee area is blessed with a lot of free and low-cost summer entertainment. Peo- ple have access, I think, to a fairly high level of enter- tainment options in the summer," Winkle said.
