2 • LAKE COUNTRY POST • MAY 30, 2015 GMTODAY.COM HEALTH Tall Pines Conservancy announces nature hike at Camp/Quad Rogers Memorial Hospital's West Allis campus celebrates 15 years WEST ALLIS — The West Allis campus of Rogers Memorial Hospital celebrated 15 years of serving the com- munity Friday. In its first year, Rogers — West Allis served 143 patients. Since opening its doors in West Allis 15 years ago, Rogers has admitted nearly 55,000 patients and provided more than 532,000 patient days of care. A 20,000 square foot addition in 2008 increased the reception and admissions area and provided specialized space for day treatment and partial hospitaliza- tion programs. The hospital added a second building one mile down the road in 2014 to house all intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs in order to expand treatment space for child and adolescent day treatment. The main Rogers Memorial campus is in Summit. www.rogershospital.org NASHOTAH — The community is invited to explore Camp/Quad, a unique 325-acre property owned by Quad/Graphics and protected through a conservation easement with Tall Pines Conservancy, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 18. Paul Norton, Zen Practitioner, will lead a walking meditation through the property, with instructions and com- mentary. Alternately, attendees may choose to explore and learn about the unique geo- logical features that make up Camp/Quad, including moraines, ket- tles and kames, with guide Professor Bill Kean of the University of Wiscon- sin-Milwaukee Geology Department. Refreshments will be served. Regis- tration is $10 per adult and $5 per child and may be completed online at http://tallpinesconservancy.org. Pre- registration is requested. For more information, please contact Tall Pines Conservancy at 262-369-0500. Founded in 1999, Tall Pines Conser- vancy is a 501(c)3 Land Trust working to preserve our rural heritage by protect- ing remaining farmland, water resources, natural areas and open spaces impacting northwestern Wauke- sha County. — Enterprise Staff Metro Editorial Osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become weakened and brittle over time, affects millions of people across the globe. The Internation- al Osteoporosis Foundation says an osteoporosis- related fracture occurs roughly once every 3 seconds, accounting for more than 8.9 million frac- tures a year. Younger individuals typi- cally heal from fractures more quickly than older adults, who often discover that fractures greatly impede their mobility and quality of life. Bone health is important at any age, but it is particu- larly crucial as a person gets older. Without a strong framework of bones, the body collapses on itself and rates of fracture increase. Fortunately, there are sev- eral ways to keep and main- tain strong bones. Bones are largely made up of a protein called colla- gen, which is bound togeth- er by calcium and other trace minerals. Vitamin D and calcium work in con- cert, with vitamin D help- ing the body to absorb calci- um so it can find its way into bones. Experts advise getting the right ratio of calcium, protein and vita- min D to safeguard against osteoporosis. The Institute of Medicine suggests that adults get between 600 and 800 international units (IUs) of vitamin D every day, and between 1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily. Dairy products, such as low- and nonfat milk, yogurt and cheese, are high in calcium. Dark green veg- etables and almonds con- tain calcium in smaller amounts. Obtaining calci- um and vitamin D through natural sources is always preferable, but doctors may suggest supplementation if foods are not providing what a person needs to meet the minimum recom- mended levels. Exercise is another important component of building strong bones. The National Osteoporosis Foundation says 30 minutes of exercise each day can help. Higher-intensity exer- cises should be mixed with lower-intensity workouts for the best results. Weight- bearing exercises, such as hiking, dancing and stair-climbing, can build between 1 and 3 percent of bone. An exercise regi- men also should include lifting weights or using resistance bands. Activities that promote good posture and flexibility can help improve balance and alignment of the body. Perform stretches smoothly and slowly after exercising to maintain your range of motion. Quitting smoking also can promote strong bones. Smoking has been linked to poor skeletal health in both men and women, and the longer one smokes, the greater one's risk for fracture. How to build and maintain strong bones Are you looking for more than just a job? Would you like to make a difference in the life of a child and their family?
